Surprise Netflix Anime Spin-Off Has Begun (And It’s Not What You Think)

Netflix is really making a push to become a major player in the anime world, both by offering popular older shows and creating its own original anime series. Titles like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steelball Run, Dandelion, Blue Box, and Sakamoto Days are now exclusive to the streaming service. And now, a new spin-off has been released from one of its most intense and action-packed series, Baki Hanma. Given the extreme content Baki Hanma has covered recently, the subject of this new side story might come as a surprise.

A new manga series, Baki Gaiden Doppo – Hitori Nomi Kui Aruki, has begun in Japan, spotlighting Doppo, a powerful character from the Baki The Grappler series. Doppo is a skilled, one-eyed karate master known for pushing his body to its limits in pursuit of strength. This spin-off takes a different approach than the main series, showing Doppo enjoying food and drinks at various bars and restaurants, both before and after his fights. While Baki creator Keisuke Itagaki isn’t directly involved, the manga is illustrated by Kenji Hamaoka. The series hasn’t yet been announced for release outside of Japan, but you can see the cover art below.

Baki Time

Netflix recently released a new anime series called Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai, bringing back the popular character Baki Hanma. The series kicked off with episodes featuring the historical figure Musashi Miyamoto, and this was just the first part! Later this year, more episodes will be available on Netflix, continuing the story of Baki as he faces off against a variety of powerful fighters who challenge the Hanma family.

A major moment in the latest anime season was the death of Sea King Retsu, a powerful ally of Baki, who died in a battle with Miyamoto. The team at egmr.ru recently spoke with the anime’s director, Toshiki Hirano, and producer, Kei Watabiki, about this significant loss of a key character.

The manga portrayed this character’s death as somewhat understated, lacking a strong emotional impact. We aimed for something different in the anime adaptation, wanting to create a more poignant and heartbreaking scene. We used music and careful scene direction to heighten the emotional weight, and it’s rewarding to see that resonate with viewers. We always strive to do our best, but we put extra effort into this particular episode, as it features the passing of a key character. Interestingly, the Japanese voice actor, Rikiya Koyama, finished recording his lines for the character with that session – it was his final performance in the role!
