The Exorcist 2 documentary….

The horror behind the horror film….

The original Exorcist is widely considered one of the scariest and most important horror films ever made. However, its sequel, Exorcist II: The Heretic, is often cited as one of the worst sequels of all time. Surprisingly, the film was directed by John Boorman. Now, a new documentary called Boorman and the Devil is taking a behind-the-scenes look at this disastrous 1977 follow-up. While a commercial and critical failure, Exorcist II has since gained a cult following, mostly due to its notoriety.

The Exorcist 2 documentary…

David Kittredge’s documentary premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2025 to widespread praise. One critic remarked, ‘I long for bold, large-scale movies that aren’t afraid to take chances. In 1977, John Boorman took a huge risk with his film The Heretic, but it didn’t resonate with audiences then. Now, we can recognize that such ambitious creative efforts are what make going to the movies special. Boorman is a truly great director, and I’m thrilled to share the story of the film that almost ruined him, and ultimately redefined his filmmaking approach.’

The contributors….

Kittredge has impressively gathered a fantastic group of people for the film, including directors Boorman, Dante, Flanagan, and Kusama, plus actresses Linda Blair and Louise Fletcher. Film critic Pete Hammond says it’s “easily one of the best movies ever made about how a film is created—and sometimes falls apart!”

Some of what went on…..

We know a lot about what happened during the making of this film, as we wrote a detailed magazine article about it years ago, and the story is truly remarkable. Director John Boorman was even hospitalized during production, and initial screenings were met with laughter from audiences – these are just a few of the many incredible tales surrounding the film.
