Originally, The Mandalorian was planned to continue with a fourth season. However, Lucasfilm changed course and decided to make a movie instead, resulting in this summer’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. This wasn’t just a matter of adapting existing scripts for the big screen, though. Director Jon Favreau quickly realized he needed to create an entirely new story to satisfy both dedicated fans and those new to the series.
Jon Favreau recently told ComicBook how The Mandalorian and Grogu came about. He explained that he actually had scripts for Season 4 completed before Lucasfilm discussed a Mandalorian movie with him. After reviewing those scripts with Dave Filoni, they realized they wouldn’t work as a film and needed to start over. Favreau then pitched a new story designed to be accessible to both longtime Star Wars fans and newcomers. He wanted viewers to be able to enjoy the movie even if they hadn’t seen the show or Ahsoka.
Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni explained the difficulty of creating a new Star Wars story that doesn’t rely on existing ones, given how interconnected the franchise has become and how closely fans follow the details. He emphasized the desire for a new film to be easy for anyone to enjoy, even if they only know characters like Mando or Grogu. He pointed out that someone might have a Grogu toy without having seen The Mandalorian, and this film would be a perfect entry point. Of course, all the previous shows and stories are still available on Disney+ for those who want to explore further.
Jon Favreau’s Approach for The Mandalorian and Grogu Was Smart

When Disney+ launched in 2019, The Mandalorian immediately became its most popular original series. Being the first live-action Star Wars TV show created a lot of excitement, and the show’s popularity soared thanks to the character affectionately known as “Baby Yoda.” Given how much fans loved The Mandalorian, it would have been easy for creator Jon Favreau to continue the existing storylines directly in the new film. However, his decision to take a different approach was a smart one.
When writing a fourth season of a TV show, writers can assume most viewers are already familiar with the story and characters from previous seasons. However, movies are different – they reach a broader audience. While many people seeing The Mandalorian and Grogu have watched The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka, there will also be viewers who are new to the story or only casually follow Star Wars. Some moviegoers might only be familiar with the films and not the TV series.
For The Mandalorian and Grogu to succeed with a wide audience and perform well in theaters, it needs to be enjoyable for everyone, even those unfamiliar with Star Wars. This is a challenge similar to what Marvel Studios faced with its recent films. Kevin Feige recognized that the complex storylines were becoming overwhelming for viewers and were hurting the movies’ performance – The Marvels, the lowest-grossing MCU film, relied heavily on previous films and Disney+ shows. Jon Favreau is aiming to avoid that issue with The Mandalorian and Grogu, wanting it to stand on its own as a compelling story.
Creating The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is a tricky challenge. The filmmakers want the movie to be enjoyable even for people who haven’t watched the Disney+ show, but they also need to satisfy longtime fans who are invested in Din Djarin and Grogu’s story. It’s important that the movie feels like a natural next step for those characters. Early reviews suggest it’s a fun Star Wars film, and Jon Favreau may have successfully balanced appealing to both new and dedicated viewers.
