The second season of The Night Manager has clarified a key point from last week’s shocking finale: the ruthless arms dealer Richard Roper (played by Hugh Laurie) did, in fact, survive.
Everyone believed the villain had been brutally killed by those he had harmed, and the season two premiere even showed what appeared to be his body being identified by Angela Burr (Olivia Colman).
However, we now know that there’s much more to that prologue than meets the eye.
The latest episode, now streaming on BBC iPlayer, shows just how easily Roper can manipulate anyone, even those who strongly oppose him. A flashback reveals how he managed to subdue Angela, a former enemy.
During a strained conversation with her ex-agent, Jonathan Pine (played by Tom Hiddleston), she described how Roper unexpectedly showed up at their simple lodging the night before they were scheduled to view his supposedly deceased body in Syria.

He threatened to kill her and Jonathan immediately, and also vowed to harm her husband and daughter if she didn’t lie and confirm his death the next day.
Angela felt trapped and had to agree, but she didn’t tell Jonathan what happened because she feared Roper would retaliate against him.
Despite this, she did tell Rex Mayhew (Douglas Hodge) that he was still alive. However, their efforts to investigate further were thwarted when Mayra Cavendish (Indira Varma) took over.
As Laurie explained after episode 3, Roper managed to survive by winning over his captors with his charm. He eventually convinced them to make a deal that would allow him to pay off his debts.

This plan, developed with Roper and his hidden son Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva), is still central to their new business strategy.
Laurie described him as someone driven to dominate – a real power seeker, almost like a pirate relentlessly pursuing conquest. He’s always striving to gain more people, land, and influence, and his biggest flaw is a need to be in control.
He’s ambitious on multiple levels – building a massive empire, but also focused on personal wins against individuals, with Pine being his main target.
“He was beaten by Pine once, and Roper is not a man to forgive or forget easily.”
It looks like the two main rivals are headed for a showdown, and it’s unclear who will win when they finally meet again. Stay tuned to season 2 of The Night Manager to see what happens.
