Despite receiving mostly negative reviews – it currently has a score of 37 on Metacritic and 43% on Rotten Tomatoes – The Super Mario Bros. Movie has become a huge financial success. Box Office Mojo reports it’s the highest-grossing film of 2026, earning $756 million worldwide.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $361 million in the US and Canada, and another $50 million in Mexico. The rest of the world contributed around half of the film’s total earnings. Importantly, the movie hasn’t been released in Japan yet, so box office numbers from that country aren’t included in these figures.
When asked about the critical response to the film, producer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto told Famitsu he was disappointed. He found it odd that those who claim to want to improve the film industry have been so critical.
I actually agreed with some of the criticism of my last movie. I was hoping this one would be received better, but the reviews are even tougher. It’s odd, because I’m trying to bring fresh energy to the film industry, and it’s disappointing to see such negative reactions from the critics who should be encouraging that.
It’s no surprise that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is doing so well in theaters. The film earned an impressive $34 million on its opening day, exceeding the $31.7 million debut of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Regarding future movie plans for Nintendo properties, Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri have stated they don’t currently have major plans for expansive storylines that would lead to a film adaptation of something like Super Smash Bros.
Miyamoto explained that, unlike games like Super Smash Bros., he doesn’t expect all Nintendo characters to be included. He also reiterated his personal rule that the Pikmin franchise can appear in any other Nintendo game series.
We already had a great cast for the movie, but we decided to include some surprise cameos to make it even more fun. There’s one in particular who has a significant part to play. We’re considering adding more characters like this in future installments, too.
Illumination isn’t thinking long-term when it comes to its movie plans. Because of this, there aren’t currently any plans to create a shared universe based on Nintendo characters, like Marvel or DC.
