War is war, Hell is Hell, and M*A*S*H is Heaven to Mike Farrell.
The 87-year-old actor described his time on the show as surprisingly cooperative. He was particularly surprised when, after joining as Captain B.J. Hunnicutt in the fourth season, director and executive producer Gene Reynolds asked for feedback from the entire cast after a table read.
During the April 20th episode of the Still Here Hollywood podcast, Farrell remembered Gene telling the group, “Okay, page one,” which struck him as odd since he felt they’d already covered it. Gene then explained that they would go through the script page by page to get feedback and suggestions from the actors.
The Providence graduate recalled feeling ecstatic, saying, “I honestly thought I’d died and gone to heaven. And then they asked, ‘You actually want to hear back from us?’”
The show, featuring Alan Alda, Loretta Swift, Jamie Farr, and others, deeply affected Farrell. He described it as consistently remarkable, becoming a true creative community for him.
His first day working on MASH*, which ran for 11 seasons until 1983, established a pattern for his involvement with the show and helped him develop other creative talents. The actor, who later wrote eight episodes and directed five of the popular war comedy-drama, explained that the show’s creators were supportive of his efforts.
Beyond his career, this was also where he formed lasting friendships, including a 90-year-old friend named Alda.

Farrell fondly remembered both those who had passed away and those still living. He and Alan have maintained a close relationship for many years.
As Jamie Farrell thinks back on the close friendships he made while working on MASH*, let’s take a look at some other famous Hollywood friends…

Nicole has always loved the films made by her sister-in-law. A few years ago, she got the chance to ask her to recreate some memorable scenes, including a famous one from My Best Friend’s Wedding.
During a May 2024 appearance on the Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino podcast, she recounted telling Cameron, ‘I need you to run towards me from behind the luggage cart, towards the airport.’ She explained that she started directing Cameron, telling her exactly what to say while they were driving. According to her, Cameron happily complied, and she appreciated Cameron’s willingness to go along with it.

It’s a good thing Lawrence was available to spend time with Schumer, or they might have missed out on a wonderful friendship! Their connection began when the Oscar-winning Lawrence emailed Schumer after seeing her 2015 movie, Trainwreck. Lawrence admitted she wrote, “I don’t know where to get started. I guess I should just say it: I’m in love with you.” They started emailing back and forth, which quickly turned into texting.
But their friendship really took off when Schumer casually invited Lawrence to join her and her high school friends for a trip to the Hamptons. Schumer was surprised when Lawrence accepted, but quickly realized Lawrence was incredibly down-to-earth. As Schumer put it, she’s “the coolest chick you’ll ever meet” and felt right at home with the group.

Everyone could use a friend who’s successful and well-established! Jennifer Lopez and Leah Remini have been incredibly close ever since they met and instantly connected at the premiere of Man on Fire in 2004. Lopez described it as an immediate, strong chemistry – feeling like she loved Remini and enjoyed being around her.
Remini was also enthusiastically cheering on Lopez when she performed at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. She told TopMob News that she messaged Lopez, reminding her of her Bronx roots and expressing how inspiring and beautiful her performance was.

Considered the ultimate celebrity friendship, this trio has remained close since they first bonded while working on the Warner Brothers lot. According to a source, their shared experience on the show Friends created a strong bond that has lasted for years. Just like staying in touch with former colleagues, they prioritize spending time together, whether it’s for casual happy hours or larger reunions. The source notes that living close to each other makes it easy to gather for things like Courteney’s Sunday dinners or Jennifer’s pool parties, and they all feel deeply connected and expect to remain so.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have been incredibly close friends ever since they met in an improv class in 1993, and they often describe their relationship as sisterly. Poehler, who has one younger brother named Greg, explained to PopSugar while promoting their 2015 movie Sisters that she and Fey are like the family she always wanted. She feels they’ve shared a special bond that she didn’t have growing up.

Philipps described meeting Williams on the set of Dawson’s Creek as love at first sight. They quickly connected as friends and naturally fell into a comfortable, slightly rebellious pattern of sharing wine, cigarettes, and even getting into occasional bar fights. That immediate affection has lasted for years. Luckily for fans, we get a glimpse into their lives – from walking red carpets and coordinating outfits to playfully dyeing Williams’ hair trendy shades of pink.

Drake and Adele, despite only recently starting to discuss working together, are eager to collaborate. After years of admiring each other’s music – they’ve won a combined 19 Grammys – they began talking about a remix. Adele confessed her admiration for Drake, even ordering the same red coat he wore in a music video. Drake jokingly offered to do anything for Adele, even chores like laundry. Instead of immediately recording, they simply enjoyed a meal and a bowling outing in Los Angeles, hinting at future collaborations.

After receiving great support from other women during her pregnancies, Eva Washington is committed to offering the same help to her celebrity friends. She shared with Entertainment Tonight that she makes a point of having open and honest conversations, particularly with Eva Longoria. Longoria greatly appreciated Washington’s advice when her son, Santiago, was born in 2018, playfully calling Washington “basically my doula.”

After winning an Academy Award over 20 years ago for Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have teamed up again for the film The Last Duel. Despite not working together on screen for a while, their close friendship remains strong. Damon explained to Entertainment Tonight that they’ve known each other for 35 years and grew up together, sharing a passion for acting and filmmaking. He believes this shared obsession during their youth created a lifelong bond.

The friendship between these two influential TV personalities began in 1976, while they both worked at a Baltimore station. Although Oprah Winfrey was an anchor and Gayle King a production assistant, and they didn’t usually mix socially due to the workplace structure, a snowstorm brought them closer. Oprah invited Gayle, who earned $12,000 a year, to stay with her. The next day, they went shopping together at the mall, and a lasting friendship began, sparked by a shared interest in sweaters at Casual Corner.

While your dates probably don’t involve Wimbledon finals or royal palaces, Meghan Markle and Serena Williams’ friendship started just like many others – with casual conversation. Meghan wrote on her now-closed website, The Tig, that they connected instantly at a 2014 Super Bowl event. They spent time taking pictures, laughing during a flag football game, and chatting about everyday things – not tennis or acting, but typical ‘girly stuff’.

Even though Game of Thrones is over, the close bond between Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams remains strong. Williams, who was a bridesmaid at Turner’s wedding to Joe Jonas in 2019, playfully suggests that the greatest outcome of the show’s eight seasons wasn’t its 12 Emmy Awards. She told TopMob News at the final season premiere that the show felt like an elaborate way to find a best friend, adding that having a friend like Turner during such a crazy experience was a true blessing.

Okay, let’s talk about something truly heartwarming! Like so many of us, I completely melted when I saw that video of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively reacting to their daughter James recognizing Taylor Swift’s “Gorgeous” at a concert – it was just adorable. Blake even called it embarrassing, but in the best way – she described it as pure, unfiltered stage parent pride, and honestly, who can’t relate?! But beyond that sweet moment, what I really love is the genuine friendship between these families. They’ve built such a lovely connection, from their Fourth of July celebrations at Taylor’s place to cozy get-togethers at Ryan and Blake’s country home, and even Taylor including them in her music videos. It’s a beautiful thing, and I think it’s something we should all celebrate and protect.

Oh my gosh, can you believe Jennifer Aniston basically gave Reese Witherspoon a friendship for the ages? I mean, seriously! Before they were killing it on The Morning Show, they actually played sisters on Friends way back when! Reese told Harper’s Bazaar she was SO young, just 23 and had just had her little Ava! She was literally pumping breast milk on set, and Jen just kept asking about the baby! Reese was all, ‘Um, yeah, it’s a little strange,’ but Jen was so sweet and genuinely curious. Reese said she was nervous, but Jen just made her feel comfortable. And that was it! They’ve been best friends ever since! It’s just the cutest story, honestly. I live for their friendship!

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg have an unlikely but captivating friendship that blossomed at Justin Bieber’s Comedy Central Roast in 2015. It later evolved into their VH1 cooking show, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. Snoop Dogg explained to LA Weekly that Martha Stewart is different from people he’s usually around, but surprisingly relatable. He said that despite their different backgrounds and generations, they connect easily because she’s genuine and doesn’t shock him. He described their connection as feeling like a strong, lasting bond – “holy matrimony,” not just a casual fling (“holy macaroni”).
