Jake Reiner is grieving the loss of more than just his parents.
Two months after his brother, Nick Reiner, entered a plea of not guilty to charges of murdering their parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, Jake Reiner has been reflecting on the devastating events and their impact on the family.
He explained in a recent online post that many people have told him they’re at a loss for words, and he understands why. He admitted that if he weren’t personally dealing with such a difficult situation, he wouldn’t know what to say either, as it’s a very unique and troubling experience.
He went on to explain that theyād lost over half their family in a horrific event. While losing a parent is always incredibly painful, he said this was different ā losing both parents simultaneously, and to make matters even worse, his brother was somehow involved.
Jake acknowledged the continued discussion surrounding the deaths of Rob and Michele, and opened up about how he, his sister Romy Reiner, 28, and his half-sister Tracy Reiner, 61 (who Rob shared with his former wife Penny Marshall), are dealing with their grief publicly.
It’s hard to even begin to understand everything,” the former broadcaster said. “I know people are looking for explanations about what occurred, and some of those will become clear eventually.”
He explained that certain items are deeply personal to his family, and they need to keep those things private to safeguard the last remnants of something they lost.
He encouraged people to remember and respect the beliefs of the director and photographer of When Harry Met Sally, especially during this challenging time for them.

As he put it, “I just ask for love and compassion – the same principles my parents lived by.”
Despite trying to stay positive, Jake has been struggling since his parents were found dead at their home in Brentwood on December 14th.
He described the experience of losing both parents suddenly as something no one could ever be ready for. It was simply too overwhelming to process. He still struggles to accept it each day, constantly hoping heāll wake up from what feels like a terrible nightmare.
Honestly, seeing what happened to them just broke my heart. They were truly the most undeserving people, and it felt so wrong. They gave so much ā to all of us, and to the world as a whole ā and all they ever deserved was love, respect, and genuine appreciation. Itās just⦠it wasnāt fair.
Nick is awaiting a court hearing on April 29th. Here’s a more detailed look at what happened with Rob and Michele’s deaths.

In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he shared that he had experienced homelessness in three different states: Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. He described living on the streets for nights and even weeks at a time, saying it was a difficult experience.
Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he āwreckedā his home while high on drugs.Ā
In a 2018 interview on the Dopey podcast, he explained that he spent days awake on stimulantsālikely cocaine and another drugāwhich led to him damaging his guest house. He said, “I went 10 rounds in my guest house,” meaning he was physically hitting things for an extended period.

According to sources who spoke with The New York Times, Nick was under a court-ordered mental health conservatorship from 2020 to 2021. A Los Angeles Superior Court clerk verified that the conservatorship ended in 2021.
Steven Baer, the court-appointed conservator and a licensed fiduciary, told the New York Times that mental illness is a widespread and often misunderstood problem, calling the situation a āhorrible tragedy.ā He did not offer any additional comments.

Detectives with the Robbery-Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section began investigating how the deaths occurred.

Footage obtained by MS NOW shows Nick buying a Gatorade at an ARCO gas station in downtown Los Angeles, near USC, around 9 p.m. on December 14th. He was wearing a green jacket, jeans, and a ballcap, and was carrying a red backpack, all while police were investigating the case.

Minutes later, the screenwriter was taken into custody near USC.
I still can’t believe it. The police⦠they actually said it. After everything, all the questions, theyāve officially determined that Rob and Micheleās own son⦠heās the one who caused their deaths. Itās just⦠devastating. Absolutely devastating. Iāve followed their story for years, and to hear it ended like this⦠itās unbearable.

As a regular follower of this case, I heard the authorities explain that every prisoner needs a medical check-up before they’re taken to court. They’re hoping the defendant will get that clearance tomorrow, so they can finally bring him in.

Okay, so I just heard the news and I’m completely floored! Apparently, District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced today that they’re officially charging Nick with two counts of first-degree murder. And it’s not just regular murder, it’s with the ‘special circumstance’ of multiple murders ā which basically means they’re going for the maximum penalty! I can’t believe this is happening… it’s just… shocking.
The District Attorney also stated that Nick will be charged with an additional allegation: that he used a knife ā a dangerous weapon ā during the attack on his parents.
He explained that if convicted, the maximum punishment could be life in prison with no chance of release, or even the death penalty.
