As a huge Marvel fan, I have to say the Dark Avengers are one of the most messed up teams ever! It all started after the Secret Invasion when Norman Osborn somehow got superpowers and the government let him build a team. It was a really twisted idea – he basically took the names and costumes of classic heroes and gave them to villains! Can you believe it? Guys like Bullseye and Scorpion were pretending to be the good guys, but they were really just helping Osborn with his awful plans. Seriously, a Thor clone was on that team! None of them deserved to wear those hero costumes, not even for a second.
This article details the most terrible actions committed by each member of the Dark Avengers, highlighting why they were unfit to carry the title of ‘Avenger’.
10) Thor (Ragnarok) – Killed Bill Foster

During the Civil War storyline, Iron Man, Hank Pym, and Reed Richards teamed up to create a clone of Thor. They used a single strand of Thor’s hair that Iron Man had previously collected. However, this clone, called Ragnarok, lacked Thor’s sense of right and wrong and was simply a programmed weapon. Tragically, Ragnarok’s most devastating act occurred during Civil War when he fatally shot Bill Foster (Goliath) with a lightning blast. Despite this, Ragnarok reappeared later as a member of the Dark Avengers.
9) Hulk (Skaar) – Betrayed the People of Sakaar

The Dark Avengers once used Skaar, the son of Hulk, as one of their team members. While Skaar has since become more of a hero, often assisting his father in fighting crime, he has a troubled past. He was born after his mother died and spent his infancy on the harsh world of Sakaar. However, Skaar acted selfishly, exploiting his mother’s spirit to doom his people when Galactus threatened their world, choosing to save himself instead of using his power to protect them. As a result, his mother banished him, and he came to Earth haunted by the betrayal of his own people.
8) Sentry – Became Void

During his time with the Dark Avengers, Sentry committed a truly shocking act by killing Ares, the God of War, by ripping him in half. However, that wasn’t even his most destructive deed. Sentry’s worst actions happened when he transformed into the Void, an uncontrollable, darker side of himself. As the Void, he disobeyed Norman Osborn and completely destroyed the city of Asgard, reducing it to ruins. Ironically, this catastrophic event ultimately led to the Dark Avengers’ collapse, resulting in a positive outcome despite the devastation.
7) Ares – Instigated the Siege of Asgard

Although Sentry was responsible for Asgard’s destruction, he didn’t actually start the war with the Norse gods – Ares did. Unlike most of the Dark Avengers, Ares wasn’t pretending to be anyone else; he was the true Greek God of War. Norman Osborn tricked him into attacking Asgard by falsely claiming Loki was planning an invasion. This ultimately led to Ares’s death, as he realized Asgard wasn’t a threat and tried to protect them just before Sentry killed him.
6) Captain Marvel (Noh-Varr) – Betrayed Avengers in AvX

Noh-Varr, a Kree warrior, briefly joined the Dark Avengers by pretending to be the deceased Captain Mar-Vell. He had a history of impulsive behavior and making mistakes, which eventually led him to betray the Avengers during the ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ conflict. He sided with the Supreme Intelligence, and when his betrayal was discovered, the Avengers stripped him of his Nega-Bands and exiled him to Hala, effectively ending any chance of him finding redemption and returning to Earth.
5) Wolverine (Daken) – Chopped Punisher Into Pieces

Norman Osborn, while leading the Dark Avengers, devised a plan to eliminate his former rivals. He framed Tony Stark as a criminal and then targeted others he considered dangerous, including the Punisher. Osborn had Daken, Wolverine’s son, take on his father’s identity and join the Thunderbolts team. He then sent Daken to hunt down Frank Castle. The confrontation was incredibly violent – Daken severed both of the Punisher’s arms and ultimately beheaded him, leading to the shocking ‘Frankencastle’ storyline.
4) Hawkeye (Bullseye) – Killed Elektra & Karen Page

Bullseye was never a true hero in Marvel Comics. Before becoming a fake Hawkeye under Norman Osborn, he was a ruthless killer responsible for numerous deaths. He specifically targeted people close to Daredevil, committing two particularly brutal acts: the murder of Elektra (in Daredevil #181, 1982) and Karen Page during the Born Again storyline. Even before the Dark Avengers, writer Frank Miller had established Bullseye as a major and dangerous villain in the Marvel Universe.
3) Ms. Marvel (Karla Sofen) – Psychologically Tortured Her Patients

Karla Sofen, known as both Ms. Marvel and Moonstone, was one of the less intimidating members of the Dark Avengers. While she sometimes tried to be a better person, particularly during her time with the Thunderbolts, she reverted to her villainous nature when she impersonated Carol Danvers. However, her most damaging actions weren’t committed as a supervillain, but during her career as a psychiatrist. She exploited her patients for financial gain, extending their treatments unnecessarily. This led to at least eight suicides and left many others with lasting, severe mental trauma, demonstrating her cruelty towards those most in need of help.
2) Spider-Man (Mag Gargan) – Ate People

Spider-Man is typically known as a very heroic character, which made his appearance with the Dark Avengers particularly shocking. The Spider-Man on that team wasn’t Peter Parker, but Mac Gargan – the villain formerly known as the Scorpion. And things were even worse because Norman Osborn had previously bonded Mac with the Venom symbiote, making him incredibly dangerous. At his most brutal, Gargan actually began consuming people, even starting to eat Jack Flag before being stopped with special implants. During the Dark Reign storyline, he continued to eat people and even killed other villains, going so far as to frame J. Jonah Jameson for a murder he himself committed.
1) Iron Patriot – Started Dark Reign

Norman Osborn, formerly the Green Goblin, took control of SHIELD with the U.S. government’s approval, renaming it H.A.M.M.E.R. He reinvented himself as the Iron Patriot, stepping into the role of America’s armored hero previously held by Iron Man. Osborn then assembled a team known as the Dark Avengers, using them to carry out his plans. This led to major events like the Dark Reign (2008-2009) and the Siege of Asgard (2010), both of which resulted in numerous deaths before Osborn was ultimately defeated.
