Anthony Stewart Head, who has sadly passed away at 72, leaves behind a remarkable career. While he appeared in many things, from Doctor Who to Ted Lasso and even commercials, he’ll be best remembered for playing Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He brought incredible depth to the role, transforming what could have been a typical, strict librarian and mentor into a character full of strength, kindness, and humor. His performance on Buffy truly cemented his place in television history.
It’s lovely to look back on all the great moments with Giles throughout the seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and it’s comforting to remember how wonderful he was. Everyone has a favorite, I’m sure, but the scene that always stands out to me is from the end of Season 2, Episode 14, “Innocence.” This is after Angel becomes Angelus and starts attacking Buffy and her friends. A heartbroken Buffy tells Giles in his car that she’s let him down, and his response, delivered beautifully by Anthony Head, is truly compassionate.
Should I scold you for acting too quickly? I could, because you did. But I know you acted out of love, and he’s shown you time and time again that he feels the same way. You couldn’t have predicted this. The next few months will be difficult for everyone, I think. But if you’re looking for someone to blame, Buffy, it won’t be me. You’ll only get my support and my respect.
Giles Became So Much More Than Buffy’s Watcher

This scene perfectly captures the dynamic between Buffy and Giles, highlighting both the depth of Giles’ character and Anthony Head’s incredible performance. It could have easily become a scolding or an overreaction, but instead, Head delivers a beautifully understated and tender moment that feels genuinely real. He offers Buffy exactly the support she needs – the kind of support many parents struggle to provide – and it’s a message that deeply resonates with both the character and the viewers. It’s a truly impactful and important scene that many people needed to see.
Giles was a truly special character on Buffy, and a big reason the show resonated with so many viewers. As the Scooby Gang dealt with relatable struggles, Giles consistently played the role of a caring father figure. Watching his relationship with Buffy evolve – from simply being her Watcher to a deeply loving parental presence, especially given her distant relationship with her own father – was a highlight of the series. Anthony Head’s performance and his chemistry with Sarah Michelle Gellar were crucial to this, and a perfect example can be seen in a touching moment from the episode “Innocence”.
There are many other scenes that demonstrate Anthony Head’s acting ability and the complexity of his character, Giles. He was particularly moving in emotional scenes – like when Buffy comforts him in the episode “Passion,” where Head perfectly conveys his pain, anger, and grief. Another standout moment is his line in “Lie To Me,” which Sarah Michelle Gellar even highlighted in her Instagram tribute to him.
He truly shines when given opportunities to be playful and enjoy himself, like when he portrayed the Fyarl demon in “A New Man,” acted like a teenager in “Band Candy” (a role subtly referenced later in Season 5 with a poignant musical moment after her passing), or showcased his singing talent in “Once More With Feeling.”
Giles, whether as the stuffy librarian, the Watcher, a father figure, a romantic interest, or a powerful magic user (famously declaring, “I’d like to test that theory”), was consistently a highlight of the show. He was always there for Buffy and her friends – his connection with Anya was especially heartwarming – and he left a lasting impression on viewers thanks to Anthony Head’s brilliant performance.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is available to stream on Hulu.
