While he appeared in many things, from Doctor Who to Ted Lasso and even commercials, he’ll be best remembered for playing Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He brought incredible depth to the role, transforming what could have been a typical, strict librarian and mentor into a character full of strength, kindness, and humor. Everyone has a favorite, I’m sure, but the scene that always stands out to me is from the end of Season 2, Episode 14, “Innocence.” This is after Angel becomes Angelus and starts attacking Buffy and her friends. A heartbroken Buffy tells Giles in his car that she’s let him down, and his response, delivered beautifully by Anthony Head, is truly compassionate.
