While Supergirl might remind some viewers of Guardians of the Galaxy due to its similar tone and a plot centered around saving an animal – Supergirl’s dog, Krypto – the film offers much more than just a repeat of that formula. Executive producer Chantal Nong Vo recently told ComicBook that Supergirl has a depth that goes beyond simple comparisons.
The film draws inspiration from many classic science fiction franchises, according to the EP. She noted that director Craig Gillespie has a strong sci-fi sensibility, with some comparing it to Guardians of the Galaxy and others to Dune. While acknowledging influences from Star Wars as well, she emphasized the importance of originality. She believes the film stands out due to its ability to blend serious and emotional themes with Gillespie’s distinctive comedic style.
Supergirl Looks Like Tremendous Superhero Fun
We’re starting to get a better idea of what the new Supergirl movie will be like, and a recent clip showed the first meeting between Kara Zor-El and Superman. While the film shares some similarities with Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s much more than just a lighthearted adventure. It’s based on the powerful Woman of Tomorrow comic book storyline and will delve into themes of trauma and grief. Kara’s dog, Krypto, isn’t just a pet or companion; he symbolizes everything she lost when her home planet was destroyed, making this a deeply personal and high-stakes story for Supergirl.
Chantal Nong Vo rightly points out that this story needs a balance of heartfelt moments and humor to avoid becoming too heavy. The ending of Superman clearly showed Kara is deeply troubled and working through trauma, with Kal-El attempting to support her. This creates a fantastic opportunity for a character-driven story focusing on Kara’s healing process – a journey that will likely be ongoing, but holds immense potential.
It’s natural to compare this to the Guardians of the Galaxy, but the DC Universe is taking a very different path. This is only the second DCU movie, yet it’s already expanding into the larger galaxy—or even multiple galaxies. That’s a big contrast with Marvel, which waited six years before taking a similar risk. Hopefully, Supergirl will define the DCU’s cosmic style, paving the way for more epic adventures. Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Lobo is already promising, and he’s sure to be a key player in future stories.
Charlie Horwood, who oversaw the creation of props, explained the team had complete creative freedom. They looked to films like Star Wars and older DC movies for inspiration, but aimed to add their own unique touches while staying true to the source material. Viewers can expect futuristic takes on classic weapons like tommy-guns, and real-world concepts were used to develop the cultures of the alien worlds. For example, Ruthye’s sword was inspired by traditional Afghan weapon-making techniques featuring gold detailing, and the Brigand weapons drew heavily from Viking and leatherwork styles. This careful attention to detail is intended to make each world and culture feel distinct and believable.
Supergirl opens in theaters June 26th.
