Throughout its run, Cartoon Network’s Toonami block has been home to many popular anime series, introducing shows like Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, Naruto, My Hero Academia, and Cowboy Bebop to a huge North American audience. But one series stands out as particularly unusual for Toonami, and surprisingly, it’s making a comeback. This news highlights Japan’s willingness to revive and adapt any anime franchise for new audiences.
Trying to say the title Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is tricky, and explaining what the show is about isn’t much easier! The first stage adaptation debuted in October 2024, directed by Keita Kawajiri and starring Kato Masaru as the main character. If you’re planning a trip to Japan, you can see the show from June 12th to 21st next summer at the Theater G Rosso, with more information coming soon. You can check out photos of the characters in costume below.
The Future of Bo-bobo

Next summer’s stage adaptation of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo tells the story of a world ruled by an emperor in the year 300X. To demonstrate his power, the emperor initiates a “Hair Hunt,” attempting to steal the hair of every citizen. While people live in fear, a hero with a Golden Afro rises to challenge him… introducing “BOBOBO-BO ・ BO-BOBO”! Alongside his allies, he embarks on a quest to defeat the emperor’s forces and bring an end to the Hair Hunt forever.
The original anime, created by Toei Animation, finished its run with seventy-five episodes in 2005. Interestingly, a manga sequel called “Shinsetsu Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo” continued the story, running for nearly two years and concluding in 2007. While there haven’t been any announcements about a new anime series, an upcoming stage show shows that this quirky story hasn’t been forgotten.
Although Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo wasn’t as popular as Dragon Ball or One Piece when it aired on Toonami, the show was so uniquely bizarre that it’s still remembered today. Even the official title of its stage play— “Super Exciting Stage Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo Fate! Nose Hair! Showdown”—highlights just how hilariously over-the-top the anime series was.
