Welsh acting legend Michael Sheen to return to stage play that kick-started career opposite It’s a Sin favourite

After a 20-year break, Michael Sheen is returning to the West End stage to perform in the play where he first gained recognition.

I’m so excited to hear that the incredibly talented actor from Good Omens is revisiting Amadeus! He actually first performed in that amazing play – the original London and Broadway production, way back in 1998 – and it’s wonderful he’s returning to such a classic role.

The play tells the story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a celebrated composer, and his intense rivalry with Antonio Salieri, a resentful composer at the Viennese court, around the year 1820.

Charlie Sheen originally played Mozart in this production, but he’s now returning as Salieri. Callum Scott Howells, known for his role in ‘It’s a Sin,’ will be playing Mozart this time.

Amadeus brings together Stephen Sheen and Matthew Howells, who haven’t worked together since the BBC drama The Way. This is also the first time Welsh actors have both played these famous characters in a single project.

So, I just heard about this new show, and it’s a big deal for Michael Sheen’s Welsh National Theatre company. They’re really making waves! They just finished a run of ‘Our Town’ earlier this year, and this new production is going to premiere in Cardiff at the New Theatre from March 9th to the 27th, 2027. Then, thankfully for those of us not in Wales, it’s heading to London’s Noël Coward Theatre from April 17th to August 17th. I’m already marking my calendar!

Michael Sheen described returning to London’s West End to perform in ‘Amadeus’ as a dream come true. He especially enjoyed the chance to play Salieri alongside another actor from Wales as Mozart, a role he’s always cherished.

I worked with Callum on my TV show, ‘The Way.’ He’s a remarkably gifted actor, and I’m thrilled to see him get this opportunity – audiences are going to love what he does next.

Launching this exciting new show in both Cardiff and London’s West End is a significant milestone for the Welsh National Theatre, as it’s the first time we’ve taken a production to both cities.

Before returning with Our Town, Sheen last performed in London in the popular show Nye. But since that was at the National Theatre, his most recent official performance in London’s West End was in the 2006 production of Frost/Nixon.

Scott Howells, known for his role in the West End production of Cabaret, will be playing Mozart in an upcoming production. He shared his excitement, saying it feels like a dream come true.

I’ve dreamed of playing this role for ages, so getting the chance to work with Jeremy and Michael to create this amazing world feels like an incredible blessing. It truly is a gift!

I’m thrilled to share a fresh and innovative version of this classic story will be performed on stage in Cardiff and London’s West End in 2027.

Okay, so this film takes us to Vienna in 1820, and it’s a real gut-punch of a story. It centers around Antonio Salieri, a composer who seems to have it all – he’s well-respected, successful, and feels he’s earned everything. But then Mozart arrives, and everything changes. Mozart is… well, let’s just say he’s not what you’d expect – a bit rough around the edges, even childish at times. But beneath that exterior is a genius, a musical gift so incredible that Salieri starts to question everything. He genuinely believes God picked the wrong person to bestow this talent on, and that’s where the real drama begins.

Overwhelmed by Mozart’s extraordinary talent, Salieri develops a consuming obsession. Driven by jealousy, he secretly plots to ruin the man he simultaneously admires and hates.

Amadeus is a thrilling film about the intense rivalry between two musical geniuses. Driven by incredible music, it explores the price of achieving greatness, showing how ambition can lead to both devotion and bitter betrayal, and how one man can push the boundaries of talent to challenge everything he believes in.

Tickets for the show become available on April 24th at 10am. There will be 15,000 tickets priced at £30 or less.
