With the new Michael Jackson movie now in theaters, people are already wondering if a second film might be made to cover more of his story.
The new film Michael, released in UK cinemas today, April 22nd, tells the story of the singer’s life and career. It follows him from his beginnings with the Jackson 5 in Gary, Indiana, all the way to becoming a world-famous star with hit albums like Off the Wall and Thriller.
Honestly, the film just stops rather suddenly in 1988, right as Michael Jackson is launching his Bad tour. It’s a little frustrating because that leaves out a full twenty years of his life and career – a lot of story still untold, as far as this movie is concerned.
Will there be another movie? Keep reading to learn what the filmmakers and cast have hinted at about a possible sequel and what it might be about.
Will there be a sequel to the Michael Jackson biopic?
While a second Michael Jackson biopic hasn’t been officially announced, people connected with the first film, Michael, have suggested it’s a possibility.
Puck News initially reported that a sequel was being discussed, but Lionsgate never officially confirmed it.
I was really excited to hear that Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson mentioned they’re already thinking about continuing the story! He said, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that while they aren’t officially announcing a second movie yet, the team is definitely working hard to get things ready to bring Michael back to the big screen soon after the first film comes out. It’s great to know they’re so committed to continuing the franchise!
I’m so excited to hear that a sequel is already being discussed! Jaafar Jackson told Entertainment Tonight that they’re actually in the early stages of developing it right now. It’s amazing to think about what could come next!

What could a potential Michael Jackson biopic sequel cover?

I really hope they make a follow-up to the Michael documentary! It would be amazing to see the story continue, covering the creation of albums like ‘Bad,’ ‘Dangerous,’ ‘HIStory,’ and even ‘Invincible.’ Those later years were full of incredible music and a fascinating evolution for him.
The documentary wraps up in 1988, right as Michael gets ready to hit the road for his Bad tour. It felt like a natural stopping point, though honestly, I wanted more! There’s so much to explore within that album – all those amazing singles like ‘I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,’ ‘Man in the Mirror,’ ‘Dirty Diana,’ and ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ deserve their own deep dives, really.
A future film might also cover the accusations of sexual abuse made against Michael Jackson in 1993.
Early versions of the Michael Jackson biopic spent a significant portion of the third act focusing on the controversy surrounding Jordan Chandler. However, after Jackson’s estate’s lawyers found a clause in their settlement with Chandler – which prohibited any portrayal of him in a film – that storyline was removed, and a new ending had to be filmed.
In 2005, Jackson was tried and acquitted for further allegations and charges.
What songs could feature in a potential second Michael Jackson biopic?
I really hope if they ever make another movie about Michael Jackson, they explore the music from his final albums – ‘Bad,’ ‘Dangerous,’ ‘HIStory,’ and ‘Invincible.’ I think there’s so much story to tell within those years and those songs.
If the movie were to feature the most popular hits from each album, it could include the following:
- I Just Can’t Stop Loving You
- Bad
- The Way You Make Me Fell
- Man in the Mirror
- Dirty
- Diana
- Black or White
- Remember the Time
- Heal the World
- You Are Not Alone
- Earth Song
- They Don’t Care About Us
- You Rock My World
Michael is released in UK cinemas on Wednesday 22 April.
