The most recent Fast & Furious movie came out on May 19, 2023, marking the longest gap between films in the series since 2006, after The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. When Fast & Furious 11 is released, nearly five years will have passed – the longest wait audiences have ever had for a new installment. This is particularly noteworthy because Fast X ended on a major cliffhanger, leaving Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his son in a dangerous situation.
We’re finally learning more about the upcoming final movie in the series – including its title, release date, and a glimpse of the plot. Unfortunately, there’s also concerning news: reports suggest the cast, often called a “family” by Vin Diesel, may be significantly reduced to cut costs. This could negatively impact the conclusion of the nearly 27-year-long Fast & Furious saga.
In Fast X, Dom and his family are targeted by Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), a vengeful son seeking retribution for his father’s death in Fast Five. The film concludes with Dom and his son, Brian “Little B” Marcos, trapped in a dangerous situation with seemingly no escape. By the time the next movie is released, nearly five years will have passed since this cliffhanger.
Vin Diesel revealed the title of the next Fast and Furious movie on Instagram on January 30, 2026. Fast and Furious 11 will be called Fast Forever and is scheduled for release on March 17, 2028. Diesel explained that the title reflects the enduring legacy of the franchise and the characters, quoting, “No one said the road would be easy… but it’s ours. One that has defined us and become our legacy… And a legacy… lasts Forever.” He also shared a photo of Dom and Brian as a tribute to Paul Walker.
Louis Leterrier, who previously directed Fast X, is back to finish the series. He took over from Justin Lin, who had directed the five Fast & Furious movies before that. With 11 films total – including the spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw – Leterrier is just the second director to helm more than one movie in the franchise.
As a big fan, I was really excited when they first announced the new movie, but the delays have been frustrating. It seems like the script has been rewritten a lot, going through several different writers. Louis Leterrier had initially planned to start filming in 2024, and Universal was aiming for an April 2025 release, but those plans fell through. Just recently, Vin Diesel mentioned on Instagram that Michael Lesslie, who worked on Now You See Me, was helping to refine the script – so hopefully, they’re finally getting it right!
What Will Fast Forever Be About?
Honestly, keeping up with where the Fast saga is going is getting tough! I was really excited when they hinted at a spin-off movie focusing on Dante Reyes, with Dwayne Johnson coming back as Hobbs after that Fast X ending. But it looks like that movie isn’t happening, which means Dante might have to be worked into Fast Forever. The latest I’ve heard is that Fast Forever will pick up right after the cliffhanger of the last movie, showing us what happens to Dom and his son and where they go from here.
This upcoming film is set to conclude the main Fast & Furious saga, likely bringing Dom Toretto’s story to a close. Most of the original cast is expected to return, including Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang, and Nathalie Emmanuel, with a possible appearance by Jordana Brewster. The movie also hints at the return of Gal Gadot and Charlize Theron. Jordana Brewster recently mentioned in an interview with Variety that Paul Walker’s character, Brian, will also be featured in the film.
It’s still unclear what the final movie script will be and who will star in it. The release date has shifted several times – originally announced for April 2025, it’s been moved to 2026, then April 2027, and now March 17, 2028. Because Fast X was very expensive to make—costing over $340 million—Universal Pictures is asking for a lower budget, which could mean reducing the number of actors or even cutting characters from the film.
The Latest Fast Forever Information
After years of speculation, Vin Diesel finally appeared at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 13th to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Fast and the Furious. He was joined by several original cast members, including Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and Tyrese Gibson. Also in attendance were Paul Walker’s daughter, Meadow Walker, producer Neal H. Moritz, and NBCUniversal chairwoman Donna Langley, according to Variety.
The event really united the team, more so than anything since the release of Fast X. Vin Diesel even wore a special blazer covered in diamonds with the Fast Forever logo on the back. The article also mentioned that Diesel announced four Fast & Furious spin-off shows were planned for Peacock at the NBCUniversal presentation on May 11, 2026.
Over the past ten years, we’ve understood that our audience wanted to see more depth in our established characters and their storylines. I felt it was important to wait until the timing and creative approach were just right before moving forward.
Out of the four potential shows, only one is currently being worked on. While details about Fast Forever are still being finalized – the script is currently being refined – recent announcements from Vin Diesel, presentations at the Peacock upfronts, and appearances at Cannes suggest the planned 2028 release date is now secure.
