Fans of Game of Thrones have a lot to look forward to this year! The popular series House of the Dragon will return for its third season this summer, telling the dramatic story of the Targaryen family’s conflict. Plus, a brand new prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will also be released.
This new series brings George R.R. Martin’s popular ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ to life, starting with the first story, ‘The Hedge Knight.’ It follows the initial meeting of the two main characters, Dunk and Egg, as they participate in a famous and legendary tournament.
Since the popular fantasy author has already penned three short stories detailing their journeys through the history of Westeros, HBO has decided to renew the series for another season.
With three separate shows taking place in very different eras of Westeros’s past, viewers are curious about where ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ fits within the overall ‘Game of Thrones’ story.
Here’s where the HBO series sits on the Game of Thrones timeline.
When is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set on the Game of Thrones universe timeline?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place around a hundred years before the start of the popular show Game of Thrones, which launched the entire fantasy world we now know.
I’m so excited about this show! It’s based on the first story featuring Ser Dunk the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, and his squire, Egg, who’s played by Dexter Sol Ansell. The story itself is set around 209 years after the Conquest – it’s cool to get a firm timeline!

AC marks the time when Aegon Targaryen took control of the Seven Kingdoms and brought them together as one. Westeros has a long and complicated history, spanning about 12,000 years, and George R.R. Martin’s detailed world-building divides it into nine different periods.
We’ve organized the HBO series to follow the timeline of events within the world of Westeros, highlighting important moments from its history.
Here’s where A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms sits within the wider Westeros timeline:
- 101 to 131 AC – House of the Dragon season 1
- 132 to 133 AC – House of the Dragon season 2
- 209 AC – A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
- 298 AC – Game of Thrones season 1
- 299 AC – Game of Thrones season 2
- 299 to 300 AC – Game of Thrones season 3
- 300 to 305 AC – Game of Thrones seasons 4-8
Why did HBO choose this era of Westerosi history to adapt?
In addition to the five novels in his popular A Song of Ice and Fire series, George R.R. Martin has written several prequel stories and expanded the history of Westeros. He’s also created companion books and detailed references like The World of Ice & Fire, Fire & Blood, and The Rise of the Dragon.
HBO had a wealth of material to draw from for future stories after the success of Game of Thrones, thanks to the detailed 12,000-year history and rich background of Westeros.
Although HBO and Sky have announced many potential new shows set in the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe – including spin-offs focusing on Jon Snow (‘Age of Heroes’/’Bloodmoon’) and Princess Nymeria (‘Ten Thousand Ships’) – ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is only the second series, after ‘House of the Dragon’, to actually be produced and aired.

Of all the stories HBO could have adapted, they went with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and for good reason. The engaging relationship between its main characters, its ties to the larger world of the story, and its generally more optimistic feel have made these two heroes particularly popular with fans.
These episodes are also among George R.R. Martin’s favorites. He’s said he really enjoyed what he’s seen, praising the performances of stars Claffey and Ansell as Dunk and Egg as “incredible.”
The story takes place over 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, during a time when the Targaryen family still rules Westeros. However, the dragons are gone, leading to a period of peace throughout the realm.
This results in a more peaceful story with a unique and optimistic feel – many consider it George R.R. Martin’s most enjoyable and hopeful work within the world of Westeros, which is something we could all use right now.
Starting January 19th, you can watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on Sky and NOW. Both seasons of House of the Dragon are also available to stream on those platforms. If you’re interested in subscribing to Sky TV, you can find more information on how to do so.
