The popular Resident Evil franchise, which has seen a string of successful new video games, is also coming back to the big screen. Director Zach Cregger, known for last year’s hit film Weapons, is at the helm of this new Resident Evil movie. Instead of directly adapting a game, Cregger has created a new story within the Resident Evil world, focusing on a courier named Bryan and his mission to deliver medical supplies. While fans shouldn’t expect to see familiar characters like Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield, they’ve been curious about how the film might connect to the established game timeline. Now, those connections have been explained.
In an interview with Screen Rant, director Johannes Roberts explained how his Resident Evil movie connects to the games. He aimed to create a story that takes place within the Resident Evil universe, happening around the same time as the events of Resident Evil 2 in Raccoon City, but tells a separate, parallel story. He wanted to capture the atmosphere and slow-burn tension that players experience in the games.
What Zach Cregger’s Comments Tell Us About Resident Evil

It appears that the upcoming Resident Evil movie, directed by Cregger, will be set during the famous Raccoon City Incident, the same outbreak seen in Resident Evil 2 where a virus turned thousands into zombies. This is a good approach for the film. Cregger aims to create a survival horror movie like Mad Max: Fury Road – a non-stop, action-packed chase. Setting the movie at the very beginning of the outbreak allows him to fully showcase the chaos as the world falls apart around the main character, Bryan, and he struggles to understand what’s happening.
Director Johannes Roberts’ statements strongly suggest his film will fit seamlessly into the established timeline of the Resident Evil game series. While interconnected storytelling across different media is increasingly common as studios try to create shared universes, it can be tricky because audiences may not have experienced all the related content. Resident Evil appears to be handling this approach well; the events of Raccoon City serve as a setting for a new, original story. This means viewers should be able to enjoy the movie even if they aren’t familiar with the games, thanks to the focus on fresh characters and a unique plot.
It’s great that the movie connects to the established game storyline, as it allows for hidden nods and references that longtime fans will appreciate. However, if the film does well and gets sequels, it will be interesting to see how those connections are maintained. Sony is likely hoping this will launch a new movie series, and the director might need to adjust his approach as the story progresses. Starting with the Raccoon City Incident is smart, because that event is where the whole franchise began. Future movies could become more complex, though, as they’d need to fit in with the events of the other games.
The team will deal with any challenges as they arise, but right now, the Resident Evil movie is looking like one of the best video game adaptations we’ve seen in a long time. The first trailer perfectly captured the feel of the games, with many scenes and visuals that fans will instantly recognize. This shows that the director was a great pick to bring Resident Evil back to the big screen. The movie’s approach of telling a separate but related story could be a good model for adapting other games, allowing filmmakers to explore a game’s world without directly recreating the plot. This method has potential, depending on the game.
