Xbox Game Pass is adding a classic RPG originally released on the NES, offering a trip down memory lane for some. Released in 1990, this game likely hasn’t been played by most current subscribers, especially since it was only available in Japan until 2021. It’s a significant RPG developed by Square, before the company became Square Enix.
On March 3rd, players with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox Game Pass Premium, or PC Game Pass will be able to play Final Fantasy III. This classic RPG came to Xbox consoles in 2024 with the Pixel Remaster, and now it’s included with Game Pass. While it’s unclear how long the game will be available on the service, Square Enix titles usually stay for either 12 or 24 months. Either way, there should be ample time to finish the 15-20 hour adventure.
1990 NES Exclusive Game
Just so you know, this isn’t the original version of the game from 1990. It’s the Pixel Remaster version, which features updated graphics and sound. It also has some gameplay improvements, a more modern interface, an auto-battle feature, and other enhancements. However, the story and core gameplay remain true to the original.
When Final Fantasy III came out for the NES (known as the Family Computer in Japan), the series hadn’t yet become widely popular or reached its full potential. Despite this, the game was successful, particularly in Japan, where it sold over 1.2 million copies.
The game follows four heroes tasked with protecting the world from an overwhelming darkness. It’s a classic setup, very similar to the role-playing games popular in the early 1990s.
Xbox Game Pass subscribers won’t have to pay the usual $17.99 to play Final Fantasy III, as it’s now included with their subscription. It joins Final Fantasy II, which was added earlier this year. Currently, these are the only Final Fantasy games available on Xbox Game Pass.
