Another new series in the popular manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump has been cancelled quickly, before it could really get started. This follows the recent cancellation of Kaedegami, which upset many readers – some understood the decision, while others felt the series deserved more time after releasing its first volume. Just a week after that announcement, three new series were launched in Weekly Shonen Jump. This meant two other series would have to be cut, and many predicted Ekiden Bros by Daiki Nono would be one of them. The series, which began in June, will end with its final chapter on October 26th, 2025.
The popular X (formerly Twitter) account @WSJ_manga shared news about the manga Ekiden Bros. While Shonen Jump typically gives new series about a year to prove themselves, canceling a series before it reaches 19 chapters isn’t unusual, though it doesn’t happen often. Ekiden Bros was Daiki Nono’s first serialized manga and started well, but ultimately didn’t maintain reader interest. Its low score of 5.61 and only 200 votes on MyAnimeList indicate it didn’t receive much engagement or positive ratings.
What Is the Plot of Ekiden Bros?

Nobunaga always loved the Tokyo-Hakune Round-Trip College Ekiden Race. He grew up around it – his mother ran a dormitory for marathon runners, and his father was a long-time Ekiden coach. Every winter, Nobunaga would eagerly watch the race, captivated by the inspiring performances, the rewards, and the pursuit of new records.
Nobunaga just started high school and is completely focused on learning all about marathons. Though he’s enthusiastic, he doesn’t want to run in one himself. He’s afraid people will make fun of his father if he doesn’t perform well. So, he’s decided to support the runners from the sidelines instead.
Things didn’t go as planned for him, but a quick disagreement with an old rival and a 10k race unexpectedly rekindled his passion for running. With Kenzaki, a star runner from Seitoku University, helping him along the way, he won the race and decided to chase his dream of competing in the Ekiden marathon. You can read the manga now on the Manga Plus app, with the final chapter coming out this Sunday. While the Japanese volume release date has been announced, it’s currently unknown if an English version will be available.
