Science fiction is now a major force in entertainment, and it’s only become more popular since its beginnings in the 1800s. The genre constantly reinvents itself with imaginative stories and ideas that make you think. Many fans consider the sci-fi films of the 80s and 90s to be classics that greatly influenced pop culture. While those earlier films were fantastic, modern science fiction is also producing some truly excellent movies.

While classic sci-fi films are enjoyable, many newer releases are equally good but don’t get the recognition they deserve. It’s easy for quality movies to be missed in such a crowded genre, and that’s why so many great recent sci-fi films are overlooked and rarely discussed.

One recent sci-fi film that deserves more attention is Colossal. It’s a frustratingly overlooked movie starring Anne Hathaway as Gloria, a writer struggling with unemployment and alcoholism. She discovers she has a strange connection to a giant monster wreaking havoc in Seoul. The film also features Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell, and Tim Blake Nelson.

Often described as a blend of Godzilla and Lost in Translation, Colossal mixes a science fiction story with relatable personal struggles and thoughtful themes. This dark comedy focuses on the connections between its characters – both with each other and within themselves – and features exciting monster action. Despite being a standout sci-fi film from the 2010s, Colossal is surprisingly overlooked and doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

3) James vs. His Future Self (2019)

Released in 2019, James vs. His Future Self is a funny Canadian sci-fi film that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Jonas Chernick plays James, a scientist working on time travel, and Daniel Stern portrays a future version of James who tries to convince him to stop his work. Cleopatra Coleman, Frances Conroy, and Tara Spencer-Nairn also star in the movie.

While the premise of James vs. His Future Self isn’t groundbreaking, it’s a truly excellent film. It’s a compelling time-travel story with a focused cast and a deep look at its main character. More than just a sci-fi adventure, the movie offers a personal and thoughtful take on time travel, yet it often goes overlooked despite positive reviews.

2) Totally Killer (2023)

Totally Killer is a unique blend of slasher horror, comedy, and science fiction, but its time-travel element is key to the story. The film stars Kiernan Shipka as Jamie, a teenager whose mother is murdered by a masked killer who first terrorized the town three decades earlier. Jamie then travels back to 1987, hoping to stop the killer during his initial series of crimes.

The horror-comedy Totally Killer, from Blumhouse, feels like a blend of Happy Death Day and Freaky. It’s a really fun and twisty sci-fi slasher movie, but because it went straight to streaming, it didn’t get the attention it deserved. While it doesn’t rely heavily on science fiction, its time-travel story combined with classic slasher elements makes for a hugely entertaining watch.

1) The Endless (2017)

The 2017 film The Endless is a sci-fi horror movie that deserves more recognition. It follows two brothers, formerly members of a UFO death cult, who are called back to the place they escaped years ago after receiving a disturbing video message. It’s a genuinely creepy and well-made film that blends science fiction and horror elements effectively.

It’s a shame more people haven’t discovered this fantastic recent sci-fi film. Despite being truly well-made, it hasn’t gotten much attention, likely because it wasn’t backed by a major studio. It’s frustrating that The Endless remains so overlooked – it’s one of the best sci-fi movies of recent years that deserves to be more widely discussed.
