As a long-time fan of mythology and a connoisseur of Jeff Goldblum‘s quirky charm, I can hardly contain my excitement for Netflix’s upcoming series, KAOS! The trailer alone has me hooked, with its intriguing blend of contemporary humor and ancient Greek gods.
Netflix unveiled the initial teaser for their upcoming series titled “KAOS,” starring Jeff Goldblum, which will debut on the platform next week. The show revolves around Greek mythological deities residing in a modern-day setting, albeit not in the style of “Percy Jackson.” Instead, it presents a more relaxed portrayal. In this production, Goldblum portrays Zeus, who grapples with an existential crisis as he contemplates aging and decides to abandon his role as the “king of the gods” to explore life. The ensemble also includes Janet McTeer as Hera, Nabhaan Rizwan as Dionysus, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, among others. Additionally, a group of mortals interact with these deities and may play a role in Zeus’ downfall.
To less formal readers, it seems reminiscent of a mature, anxiety-ridden counterpart to Percy Jackson, and given the success of that series on Disney+ thus far, the timing could be ideal. Here’s the trailer you might want to check out.
As a gamer, in the game KAOS, I found myself as Zeus, the King of the Gods, who for eons had basked in my divine glory. One fateful morning, I woke up to discover an unfamiliar wrinkle on my forehead, sparking an unsettling anxiety within me. This neurosis sent me spiraling down a treacherous path of paranoia, convinced that my reign was about to crumble. Everywhere I looked, I perceived signs of impending doom.
In a covert manner, Zeus’ trustworthy brother Hades, the God of the Underworld, is experiencing a gradual loss of control over his dark realm. A queue of spirits is amassing, eager to be dealt with, but they are becoming increasingly agitated. In contrast, Hera, Queen of the Gods, wields her authority on Earth and over Zeus in an unconventional manner. However, her power and autonomy are under siege due to Zeus’ escalating paranoia, compelling her to take action. Meanwhile, Dionysus, Zeus’ rebellious son, played by Nabhaan Rizwan, is hurtling towards a cosmic confrontation with his father.
On our planet, humanity yearns for transformation, yet Poseidon, deity of the sea, storms, earthquakes, and horses, seems preoccupied with the grandeur of his super-yacht and the location of the next social gathering. The welfare of ordinary people holds minimal significance to him. Regrettably for the gods, some of these mortals are starting to recognize this fact…
As someone who has spent years studying mythology and the ways in which it reflects the struggles and triumphs of human life, I find myself deeply intrigued by the characters of Riddy, Orpheus, Caneus, and Ari. Their diverse backgrounds, from various walks of life as they are, seem to mirror the rich tapestry of humanity itself. However, what sets them apart is not their origins but rather their cosmic connections in the battle against Zeus.
KAOS is set to debut on Netflix on August 29th.
