‘Greenland’ Is a Streaming Success on HBO Max 5 Years After Its Release

Gerard Butler has become a reliable action movie star over the past ten years, and one of his most popular films is currently climbing the charts. This movie, which features Butler alongside Morena Baccarin, is about a worldwide apocalypse and its long-awaited sequel is coming out in January.

I was really excited for Greenland when it was announced, but unfortunately, its release was pushed back a few times because of the pandemic. It finally came out in 2020, but here in the US, it didn’t get a proper theatrical run – it went straight to VOD and then started streaming on HBO Max and Amazon Prime. It’s a shame because I think it could have done really well in cinemas! ‘Greenland 2: Migration’ Arrives in Theaters in January

Although the first Greenland movie didn’t get much attention in theaters, its sequel, Greenland 2: Migration, will have a better opportunity to succeed when it comes out on January 9, 2026.

The new movie continues the story five years after the world ended, with the Garrity family leaving their safe bunker in Greenland to find a new place to live in what’s left of Europe. Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin return as the parents, and Roman Griffin Davis now plays their son, taking over from Roger Dale Floyd. Even before this movie is released, producer Sébastien Raybaud has hinted at a potential third film, if they can come up with a good story idea. He previously stated:

Filming finished in July, and I recently saw a rough cut – it’s looking really good! It’s a fantastic accomplishment for everyone who worked on it. With a $90 million budget, this is exactly the kind of movie we’d like to see more of being made in Europe. We’re now discussing potential plans for what comes next, though there’s a potential complication with the second film, but I’m confident we’ll be able to resolve it.

The movie Greenland was highly praised as one of the best films of the past ten years, which helped bring it back into the spotlight before the new sequel comes out. If Greenland 2, with its $90 million budget, performs well in theaters next month, we can probably expect to see even more movies in this series soon.
