If you’re tuning into EastEnders today, you may well confuse it for an episode of Black Mirror.
The Black Mirror episode ‘Be Right Back,’ which aired in 2013, explored the idea of communicating with people after they’ve died – a concept that seemed like science fiction then. But with the rapid development of technology over the past thirteen years, this possibility is now becoming a reality.
Love it or hate it, artificial intelligence is now woven into the fabric of our daily routines. We see it everywhere, from students using tools like ChatGPT for help with schoolwork, to realistic fake videos being used to scam people out of money.
Patrick Trueman from EastEnders, played by Rudolph Walker, likely never imagined he’d find himself needing this.

I was immediately drawn to the character of Denzel Danes, this really tech-savvy young guy. He’s a great kid, and he’s motivated by his friend Tommy to do something incredibly touching – build a chatbot based on Anthony Trueman, who’s passed away. It’s all to help Patrick cope with his loss, and honestly, it’s a really clever and emotional storyline.
Anthony was killed on Christmas, shortly after his father, Patrick, shockingly revealed he wished he had died instead of Anthony’s older brother, Paul.

Patrick felt terrible about what he’d said, and that feeling only got worse when he found out his granddaughter, Jasmine Fisher (played by Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness), was the one responsible – the very same girl he’d invited into his home.
He’s spent his days in his pyjamas, knocking back rum and refusing to leave the house.
Denzel thought his invention could help Patrick relax and open up to Anthony, hoping Anthony would offer some comfort in return. But when he first showed it to Patrick, he was shocked by the reaction.

Patrick ran to the bedroom, crying, and his wife, Yolande, was very worried. She told Denzel not to get involved and to allow Patrick to mourn in his own way.
That evening, Patrick came out of the bedroom and asked to talk with Anthony. They chatted and joked around while Denzel and Yolande curiously watched from outside.
She doesn’t seem convinced about AI, but it will be interesting to see how she reacts as her husband starts relying on it more and more.
