Pokémon Winds and Waves is Open World, Nintendo Teases Special Pikachu Involvement

The newest Pokémon games, Pokémon Winds and Waves, are coming soon! The official website confirms that these games will be played in a fully open world, though the announcement trailer didn’t mention this.

The game takes place across stunning islands and a huge ocean with sparkling waves. You’ll discover Pokémon that live peacefully within the region’s rich natural world, each having created their own special habitats. You’ll work together with these Pokémon to navigate challenges, overcome obstacles, and even face the power of nature itself.

Each new version of the game features slightly different outfits for the main characters – think hats, backpacks, and even what look like hoverboards to help them get around. You’ll also meet two new Special Pikachu – Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu – who are adorable and seem to play an important role in the story. Nintendo promises to share more details about their involvement soon.

Some players might worry about the game’s open world, considering the performance problems with Scarlet and Violet. However, those games were on the original Switch, and this new game being exclusive to the Switch 2 could mean a smoother experience.

Okay, so the new Pokémon game, Winds and Waves, isn’t coming out until 2027 – that’s a long wait! But good news is, if you’re itching to play something right now on Switch, they’ve released FireRed and LeafGreen, which are remakes of the original Red and Green versions. The bad news? Each one will set you back twenty bucks, and they don’t have support for different languages. Plus, don’t expect to see them added to the Nintendo Switch Online library anytime soon, unfortunately.
