Following significant changes made by the Care Quality Commission, another well-loved doctor from the TV show Casualty has chosen to leave through voluntary redundancy.
In the earlier part of this collection, titled Learning Curve, Holby City’s emergency room didn’t pass an unexpected inspection. This inspection started after Dr. Matty Linlaker (Aron Julius) raised concerns about how the hospital was operating, particularly after a patient died while waiting in a hallway.
The second inspection also revealed problems. Matty was wrongly instructed by Kim Chang, another new doctor, on how to perform a spinal tap, and unfortunately, a patient was left paralyzed as a result.
Following the inspection, CQC inspector Ceri Mayland (Gwyneth Strong) instructed the hospital to send all serious trauma patients to St James’s, which is located across town. Feeling responsible for the situation as clinical lead, Flynn Byron (Olly Rix) volunteered for a previously planned layoff.

Today on the show, paramedics Iain Dean and Indie Jankowski responded to a heartbreaking call at a parking garage. A tired mother unintentionally ran over her baby with her car.
Iain immediately knew the aging ambulance wouldn’t reach St James’s Hospital and alerted Jan Jenning (Di Botcher) that they needed to reroute to Holby City. Just as he turned around, the engine started smoking, forcing them to request assistance.

In the emergency department, Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless) strongly opposed admitting the child, warning Jan that doing so could lead to trouble with regulators. Meanwhile, the rest of the staff were listlessly passing the time with pizza, wheelchair races, and general boredom. Stevie eventually agreed a change was needed, realizing this situation might finally force them to address their issues.
Iain rushed the baby to a nearby housing estate and was able to help him calm down. He then brought the child to the emergency room at Holby Hospital. The baby briefly stopped breathing and doctors performed CPR, but thankfully, he pulled through.
Nurse Rida Amaan (Sarah Seggari), a senior member of the staff, learned that if the facility failed another inspection, they would have to let two employees go – including one she personally paid.

Doctors suspected a patient was actually an undercover inspector from the Care Quality Commission, so Rida approached her to investigate. To Rida’s surprise, Rash Masum (Neet Mohan) discovered the patient’s blood tests showed concerning results and that she knew the hospital’s CEO.
Realising her huge mistake, she told Flynn that she was prepared to be put forward for redundancy.
Is this the end of Rida’s time at the infirmary?
Casualty airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
