As The Coalition develops the new Gears of War: E-Day, Cliff Bleszinski, a former designer on the series, has given the studio positive feedback. In a conversation with The Expansion Pass, he said returning to the Locust as a serious threat is a smart move for Gears of War. He also mentioned that the enemies in Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, known as the DeeBees, weren’t very challenging.
Bleszinski believes the decision to revisit and deliver what fans want is a good one. He mentioned the anticipation surrounding ‘E-Day,’ noting the numerous articles written about it. He feels the potential for powerful, cinematic scenes is huge, specifically referencing the emotional impact of Marcus reaching for Dom’s hand – a moment fans affectionately dubbed the ‘ultimate gaming bromance.’ He expressed strong approval of returning to that emotional core rather than simply adding a zombie version of Dom as a multiplayer feature.
According to Cliff Bleszinski, Gears of War: E-Day seems to be a positive step for the series, with The Coalition moving away from the more recent robotic enemies and the Lambent to focus on the classic enemies from the original Gears of War games. He also expressed excitement about the game’s trailers and the return of Marcus Fenix as the main character.
Honestly, I think the developers are really turning things around with this new game. It sounds like we’re done with fighting those annoying robots and the Lambent – thank goodness! They’re focusing on making the Locust truly terrifying again, which is awesome. Seeing Marcus struggle with even one Locust in the trailer was a really smart move, and that ‘Welcome Home’ banner? It perfectly shows how things are never really okay on Sera. Like, congrats on ending the Pendulum Wars, but surprise – there’s something even worse coming. It’s a cool way of showing what happens when humans are constantly at war – someone else always comes along and makes things even worse. I’m seriously hyped for this, and I can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with.
We’ll learn more about Gears of War: E-Day on June 7th. Microsoft is holding a dedicated presentation for the game right after its main Xbox Games Showcase. While it’s unclear exactly what will be shown, it’s likely they’ll finally announce a specific release date, moving beyond the current 2026 timeframe.
During a recent conversation on the Official Xbox Podcast, Matt Booty, who leads content at Xbox, discussed the upcoming Xbox Direct presentation. He didn’t reveal many details, but he did say it will last about 30 minutes and be packed with news and announcements.
He mentioned they’re about to showcase Gears Direct, and that will be followed by around 30 minutes of new content, which he’s really happy about. He also expressed his enthusiasm for the team and the game, saying they’re going to have a great 30 minutes of material to share.
Gears of War: E-Day is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. This marks the first time a Gears of War game will be available on PlayStation.
