Why is the directors name in the title, ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’?

Tom Cruise starred in an action-packed Mummy film in 2017, but the new movie, directed by Lee Cronin, aims for a more traditional horror experience. It’s unusual to see a director’s name so prominently featured in the title, especially given this is only Cronin’s third feature film.

Talking to trade paper Variety the director Lee Cronin explained….

After reading the script, everyone recognized my style and asked if I thought I should direct. I was honestly surprised and needed some time to consider it. I talked it over with people I trust, and they encouraged me, pointing out that the script clearly reflected my creative voice. Knowing Jason, a very insightful person, believed in the project and was offering his support made the decision easier. I was mostly flattered by the recognition, and it’s exciting to think this movie will feel distinct from my previous work.

After the release of a fourth Mummy film featuring Brendan Fraser, the director was questioned about potential overlap or conflicts with that movie, and whether any legal or contract issues were involved. He responded…

It’s likely a combination of factors. We aimed to establish a unique brand and avoid any misunderstanding.

He mentioned being part of the exclusive group of directors who have films named after them…

Things definitely won’t always be like this! My producer, John Keville, likes to tease me – whenever I sit down, he pretends my chair belongs to Lee Cronin. But I think focusing on that name was a good move for the film, even from a marketing perspective. Susie Shen, a brilliant trailer editor at Warner Brothers, understood this too. I remember talking to her about the title, and she pointed out that it was great because it allowed us to play with what audiences expected. She said being able to do that was incredibly valuable.
