While some TV shows become truly legendary, most fall somewhere in the middle. The really great ones aren’t just popular—they become part of our shared cultural experience and are remembered for years. Many shows, however, are simply decent. Even these average series can still be enjoyable and keep viewers coming back, even if they don’t reach iconic status.
Some TV shows are consistently great from beginning to end, but others have just one truly outstanding episode. These shows aren’t necessarily bad, but they’re generally pretty ordinary – except for that single, perfect installment. It’s strange when a show that’s usually just okay suddenly delivers a truly exceptional story, but it happens from time to time.
5) Terra Nova

Though it originally aired a single season of 13 episodes, the sci-fi show Terra Nova has largely faded from memory. While it showed promise, the show never quite lived up to its potential, remaining fairly unremarkable. However, the season finale was a standout, unexpectedly delivering an exciting and impressive conclusion to what had been a typical first season.
4) Gotham

Though Gotham gained a dedicated following during its five seasons, it wasn’t always considered a top-tier Batman adaptation. While the show had promising ideas, it generally fell into the category of ‘average.’ However, one episode truly shines: season 3’s “The Gentle Art of Making Enemies.” This episode brilliantly delves into the origins of the Batman-Joker dynamic, featuring outstanding performances from David Mazouz (as Bruce Wayne) and Cameron Monaghan (as Jerome Valeska). It’s a standout success in a series that was otherwise fairly unremarkable.
3) Picard

Although opinions on Star Trek: Picard are mixed, it generally doesn’t measure up to the quality of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The show tackles ambitious ideas, but doesn’t always succeed. However, the first season episode “Nepenthe” stands out as a truly exceptional piece of television, demonstrating a deep understanding of its main character. This more personal and intimate episode, focused on the bonds between old friends, is perfect from beginning to end, offering a heartwarming conclusion that was exactly what the series needed. While Star Trek: Picard had some strong moments, “Nepenthe” remains the only truly flawless story in the entire show.
2) Avenue 5

Avenue 5 had an interesting idea, but the show itself was mostly just okay. However, one episode truly shined. Season 1, episode 8, “This is Physically Hurting Me,” features a power shift on the cruise ship that leads to heartbreaking consequences. This episode perfectly captured the show’s intended blend of dark humor and serious themes, making it the clear standout of the entire series.
1) Castle Rock

While many Stephen King stories have been successfully adapted for the screen, Castle Rock stood out for its unique approach. Rather than adapting a single story, the show drew inspiration from multiple King works. Despite an interesting concept, it never quite became a truly exceptional series. The first season’s episode, “The Queen,” was a clear highlight, offering deeper character development and fresh perspectives on earlier events. This episode was the only time the show fully realized its potential; the rest of the series was generally unremarkable.
