Andre Royo Joins ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Cast in Mystery Role

James Gunn, the writer and director of the upcoming Superman sequel (following his 2025 hit), is adding more actors to the cast. The newest addition is Andre Royo, and Gunn announced the news on Threads with a photo of Royo alongside the cast and crew. Gunn shared that he hadn’t worked with Royo in fifteen years and was excited to collaborate again. Royo is the person on the right in the photo.

Royo acted in James Gunn’s 2010 dark comedy, Super, which featured Rainn Wilson as a troubled cook who becomes a vigilante. Gunn also cast Nathan Fillion, who had previously played Green Lantern in Superman, showing his tendency to work with familiar faces. Royo has also been in shows like Empire and the film Beautiful Boy, but he’s most known for his role as Reginald ‘Bubbles’ Cousins on HBO’s The Wire. Bubbles was a homeless heroin addict who helped the police, and despite his circumstances, he was often one of the most kind-hearted characters on the show.

Gunn does not reveal who Royo will be playing, but we can make some guesses.

Who Could Andre Royo Play in ‘Man of Tomorrow‘?

It hasn’t been officially announced, but many believe Royo will be playing J’onn J’onzz, better known as the Martian Manhunter – a superhero alien who can change his shape. Director James Gunn has been subtly suggesting the character’s appearance for some time now. He’s repeatedly shared images of ‘Chocos,’ a made-up cookie brand that J’onn J’onzz loves in the DC Comics. While this isn’t official confirmation, Gunn is known for playfully teasing fans with hints.

James Gunn has indicated he’s planning a wider superhero universe beyond just Superman. We’ve already seen glimpses of this with characters like Guy Gardner, Mr. Terrific, and Hawkgirl. The upcoming film will introduce even more heroes, including Green Lantern John Stewart. It appears Gunn is building towards a Justice League team, and while it’s just speculation, many believe Martian Manhunter, potentially played by Andre Royo, will be included. Given the other heroes already confirmed, and Gunn’s subtle clues, this seems like a reasonable possibility.

Joining the cast of Man of Tomorrow are Adria Arjona as Maxima and Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, who will serve as the film’s primary villain. Nicholas Hoult is also returning as Lex Luthor from the previous movie. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will reprise their roles as Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively, and Skyler Gisondo will be back as Jimmy Olsen.

The Martian Manhunter isn’t as famous as some other DC superheroes, but he has a solid history of appearances in TV and animation. Carl Lumbly voiced the character in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, while David Harewood and Phil Morris played him in the live-action shows Supergirl and Smallville. He also made a quick appearance in the ending of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, portrayed by Harry Lennix. As a popular character in DC Comics, it’s likely we’ll see him in James Gunn’s new DC Universe soon.

I’m so excited! We finally get to see Man of Tomorrow in theaters on July 9, 2027! But the wait won’t be too bad, because the Supergirl spin-off, with Milly Alcock playing Superman’s cousin Kara, is coming out on June 26, 2026. I can’t wait!
