11 Years Later, Major Crunchyroll Drama Anime Prepares For Its Finale in September

Originally a novel series by Ayano Takeda that began in 2013, Sound! Euphonium became a popular anime in April 2015. A manga adaptation with illustrations by Hami followed shortly after, appearing on the Kono Manga ga Sugoi website. The series was beautifully animated by the renowned Kyoto Animation studio, who have released three seasons and several films over the years. While perhaps not as widely known internationally as it is in Japan, Sound! Euphonium is highly regarded as one of the best musical drama anime franchises ever made. The latest third season premiered in April 2024, and will also be released as a two-part theatrical film.

Currently, release dates have only been announced for Japan, and there’s no news yet about when the film will premiere internationally. All seasons of the anime are available to stream on Crunchyroll and Prime Video. The anime series has finished its run, and the final installment simply revisits the events of season three. To celebrate the film’s first part, Kyoto Animation released a 6-minute and 30-second opening sequence video on their official YouTube channel.

What Is Sound! Euphonium About?

Kumiko Oumae is a new student at Kitauji High, hoping to leave her past behind and start over. She quickly makes friends with Sapphire Kawashima and Hazuki Katou, and soon finds herself playing the euphonium and joining the school band. Unfortunately, the band is in trouble and may not be able to perform at the upcoming Sunfest festival.

Competing nationally is unrealistic for the band. Their new advisor, Noboru Taki, points out they can either enjoy playing music or dedicate themselves to serious training for a national competition. Kumiko, however, struggles with confidence after a mistake she made in middle school continues to bother her. To make things more complicated, Reina Kousaka, with whom she doesn’t get along, has also joined the band. Despite these difficulties, the girls are working hard to reach their goals.

I watched as the band really geared up in the third season, determined to win gold at the national competition. It was especially meaningful because it was the last chance for Kumiko and the graduating third-year students to earn a medal. Beyond the pressure of the competition itself, Kumiko was also questioning whether she had the skills to step up as the new Club President. The season really felt like a culmination of everything they’d worked for, as the girls poured their hearts into achieving their ultimate goal.
