It was a surprise when Netflix announced a reboot of The Addams Family, but the resulting show, Wednesday, quickly became one of the streamer’s biggest hits. The show’s success was due to a few key ingredients, including the performance of rising star Jenna Ortega in the lead role and the involvement of director Tim Burton, who brought his unique style and familiar creative team to the project. Wednesday not only revitalized The Addams Family after decades, but also became Netflix’s most popular English-language series ever.
Other streaming services are taking notice of the popularity of Wednesday, and Disney+ is planning to do the same with a new series based on Casper the Friendly Ghost. According to reports, this reimagining of Casper will be a modern, darker take on the classic story, aiming to capture the success of Wednesday. While Casper is known for being friendly, this new version will apparently have a bit of an edge. The project has some talented people working on it, which could help it become as popular as Wednesday by having a well-liked figure leading the way.
Disney+ Is Rebooting Casper in the Spirit of Wednesday

The new Casper series will be produced by Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, the team behind the popular Disney+ show Goosebumps. Letterman also directed the Goosebumps movie in 2015, giving them plenty of experience with supernatural stories. Adding even more star power, Steven Spielberg, who was an executive producer on the 1995 Casper reboot, will also be involved. Like the 1995 film starring Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman, the new series will probably use CGI to bring Casper to life.
It’s challenging to imagine how a Casper series could capture the same darkly comedic feel as Wednesday, considering its close ties to The Addams Family. While Casper’s world already includes quirky ghosts like Stretch, Fatso, and Stinkie, other classic Harvey Comics characters – such as Wendy the Good Little Witch, Spooky, and Hot Stuff – could also easily fit into the show.
Although Casper has traditionally been a lighthearted, family-focused franchise, trying to reimagine it as a dark, edgy show like Wednesday feels like a big change. However, a new Casper series could still be a hit with today’s audiences, much like Wednesday. To do that, it needs a captivating lead actor—either playing Casper himself or a similarly compelling character, like Christina Ricci’s role in the 1995 movie—someone who can really grab viewers’ attention.
The new Casper series on Disney+ is a bit different for the streaming service. Unlike most of its shows, Casper isn’t based on characters Disney already owns. The Casper franchise is actually owned by Universal, who are partnering with Disney’s DreamWorks Animation TV and UCP to create the show, making it one of the few non-Disney-owned properties on the platform.
