With the upcoming theatrical release of content featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu this summer, Star Wars fans have been enjoying the animated series Maul – Shadow Lord on Disney+. The show boasts beautiful visuals – making lightsaber battles particularly stunning – and a captivating story that delves into the darker side of the Star Wars galaxy. Shadow Lord is proving to be a welcome addition to the official Star Wars story, adding depth and nuance to the character of Maul. Good news for fans: even before the first season finished, Lucasfilm confirmed that a second season is planned, and Sam Witwer recently shared an update on its progress.
In an interview with The Direct, Sam Witwer provided an update on the release of Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2. While he couldn’t reveal a specific date, he indicated it’s coming soon. “It follows the typical production timeline… I know when it will be released, but I’m not allowed to share that information yet,” Witwer explained. “We’ve been working on it for some time, and it’s shaping up well.”
Sam Witwer’s Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2 Update Is Great News for Fans

According to recent comments from the creator, the second season of Maul – Shadow Lord was being planned for a while before it was officially announced, showing how much Lucasfilm believed in the show. That belief seems justified, as the first season of Shadow Lord has a very high 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Because of this success, fans are excited for more episodes and will likely want the new season to arrive quickly. It’s common for streaming shows to have long delays between seasons, and Star Wars is no different – we’re expecting the second season of Ahsoka this year, three years after the first season aired.
Star Wars animated shows have consistently been released fairly regularly. The Bad Batch premiered in 2021, with its second season arriving in 2023 and the final season in 2024. If the new show, Shadow Lord, follows a similar pattern, we can expect Season 2 to be released by 2028. It’s also possible it could arrive as early as next year, depending on how much progress the creators have already made. While Ray Witwer has said they’ve been working on it “for a while,” it’s hard to know exactly how much of the season is complete. However, it sounds like development is going well.
Season 1 of Shadow Lord set up some compelling characters and stories – even hinting at connections to Dryden Vos! Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long for Season 2. It’s often a good move for shows to continue while fans are still excited. However, Lucasfilm Animation needs to avoid rushing things. The first season was a hit, and they don’t want the next one to disappoint, which could damage the series in the long run. If Season 2 takes a couple of years to arrive, it’s likely because the creators are taking the time to ensure it’s the best it can be.
The potential series Shadow Lord could be a significant project for Lucasfilm’s future. With no new live-action Star Wars TV shows currently planned after Ahsoka Season 2 – as the studio focuses more on theatrical films – Disney+ will still need fresh content, and Shadow Lord could fill that need. The series could make Darth Maul the central figure of Star Wars television for the next few years, which would be a fitting continuation considering The Clone Wars originally brought the character back and developed him into the compelling villain he is today. While the story has a natural endpoint due to Maul’s established fate, it’s just beginning, making it crucial to carefully manage production and release schedules.
