My Expectations Were High, but The Boys’ Supernatural Reunion Was Even Better Than I Expected

As a longtime fan of Supernatural, I was really looking forward to seeing Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins appear in Season 5 of The Boys, and their cameos exceeded my expectations. The latest episode, titled “One-Shots,” focused on several different characters. Warning: Spoilers ahead! This week’s installment gave Firecracker some unexpected complexity (before her tragic end), continued to hint at Sister Sage’s upcoming betrayal, and showed that Butcher still has a glimmer of humanity left.

The standout moment of the season was a flashback scene featuring Soldier Boy and Homelander visiting Mister Marathon in Los Angeles. They were hoping to get information about the lost V1 serum from Jared Padalecki’s character, but the meeting quickly became heated and turned violent. It was a really funny addition to The Boys, cleverly referencing Eric Kripke’s previous work while also moving the main plot forward. It hit just the right note – I’m still chuckling about it more than a day later!

The Boys Season 5, Episode 5’s Supernatural Reunion Was Even More Hilarious Than I Expected

It was always going to be fun to see Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Jim Beaver share a scene again, even before The Boys brought them together. But their reunion in the episode “One-Shots” was even better than I hoped! The scene was clearly going to be special, especially with surprise appearances from stars like Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani. The clever, self-aware humor of the poker game set the stage perfectly, since Supernatural was famous for that kind of comedy too. And the quick exchanges between Soldier Boy, Mr. Marathon, and Malchemical were fantastic.

The scenes with Soldier Boy and Mister Marathon—sharing drugs and playfully mocking Homelander—felt like a mature-themed episode of Supernatural, and it was fantastic. But the real humor started when they turned on each other, with Mister Marathon and Malchemical trying to manipulate Soldier Boy into killing Homelander and taking his place. Their absurd lines were genuinely funny, and the resulting fight—where Soldier Boy used all of Mister Marathon’s associates as shields—was exactly the over-the-top, chaotic action The Boys is known for. It was a standout scene of the season, and a clever way to reunite the Supernatural cast.

Jared Padalecki’s & Misha Collins’ Appearances Pay Homage to Supernatural and Benefit The Boys

One of the things that made the recent reunion of the Supernatural cast on The Boys work so well was its restraint. Instead of relying heavily on the actors’ established chemistry, the show offered subtle references to their previous work. For example, when Soldier Boy and Homelander arrived, posters for movies featuring Mister Marathon included nods to Supernatural – like Ghost Runner 2: Supernatural Speedster and Mr. Marathon: Vampire Hunter. Beyond these small details, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins played characters very different from the ones they portrayed on Supernatural, creating entirely new dynamics.

One of the most fun parts of the recent appearance was seeing those characters in a completely unexpected situation. But beyond the laughs, it served a real purpose. The writers cleverly connected this storyline to the bigger picture of Season 5, especially helping to develop Soldier Boy’s character and deepen his relationship with his son. As Soldier Boy starts to align with Homelander, things will become even more difficult for The Boys. If they manage to find Bombsight and get their hands on V1, Homelander and Soldier Boy could become unstoppable.

The Much-Anticipated Supernatural Reunion Struck the Perfect Balance

The recent Supernatural reunion in The Boys Season 5 was a big hit. It pleased fans of the original series, was genuinely funny, and felt natural within the show’s storyline. It could have easily taken over the entire episode or overshadowed important character development, like what’s happening with Soldier Boy. However, The Boys handled it perfectly, balancing the main plot with a fun, self-aware moment. Now, I’m even more excited for a potential Season 16 of Supernatural! Hopefully, this isn’t the last time we see those characters together, but if it is, it was a truly great way to say goodbye.
