Godzilla Minus One Roars Back to Life With Major Revival Thanks to Sequel Hype

Later this year, the new film Godzilla Minus One is expected to be a huge hit, building on the success of the movie that earned the first Academy Award for a kaiju film. Despite being seemingly destroyed in a desperate attempt by Japan to defeat him, this version of Godzilla has remarkably recovered. As excitement builds for the sequel arriving in November, more and more people are discovering or revisiting the original Godzilla Minus One.

Recent sales data from April 12th to 18th shows that Godzilla Minus One was the best-selling Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray of the week. The release of the trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero significantly boosted sales of the first film, causing it to jump 120 places in the rankings. This demonstrates strong fan interest in Takashi Yamazaki’s vision for the Godzilla story. Yamazaki himself acknowledged the surge in popularity on social media, expressing his gratitude and excitement.

Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Universe Expands

Fans are eager to know if Godzilla will face any other monsters in the new film, Godzilla Minus Zero. Interestingly, the director, Yamazaki, has previously designed his own version of Mechagodzilla – one of Godzilla’s classic foes. You might be surprised to learn where this new Mechagodzilla design first appeared, and whether it will be featured in the upcoming movie this November.

Last August, Seibuen Amusement Park in Japan collaborated with Yamazaki to design a unique ride featuring Mechagodzilla. “Godzilla The Ride: Great Clash” presented a fresh take on the mechanical monster, battling it against Godzilla as envisioned by Takashi. With a redesigned appearance reflecting changes to the Godzilla universe, the potential inclusion of America in the next installment could be a great way to integrate Mechagodzilla into this world. Even if Mechagodzilla doesn’t appear, Toho has a large selection of monsters that could be reimagined. While Legendary’s MonsterVerse has already introduced many classic monsters to Western audiences, this new “Minus” universe will need to expand its roster of kaiju to match.
