Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Remake’s Map Size & Improvements Revealed

For a while, everyone knew a remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag was coming – leaks and rumors had spread widely. Ubisoft even jokingly acknowledged this in the teaser for the game’s first trailer. Following that initial reveal, Ubisoft recently shared more details on Reddit about the upcoming game, including improvements to combat, the size of the game world, and new features for sailing and naval combat.

During a recent Reddit Q&A, creative director Paul Fu and game director Richard Knight discussed the game’s map. While it remains 16 square kilometers in size – the same as the original – it’s been made more detailed with new islands and areas within the cities. Unlike the first game, exploring this large world will be seamless, without any loading screens, as Ubisoft previously announced. According to a comparison by YouTuber Perkovic, Black Flag has the second-largest map in the Assassin’s Creed series, only surpassed by Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Both Odyssey and Black Flag feature expansive oceans, but Odyssey has more landmass, which is why it’s a slightly larger game.

While sailing in the game, players can use an autopilot feature similar to those in other Assassin’s Creed titles. However, the developers emphasize staying alert, as ambushes can happen at any time. Like recent games in the series, Resynced won’t have a traditional mini-map. Instead, it will use a compass to guide players and encourage them to keep their focus on the ocean environment without cluttering the screen.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced Will Carry Over Many Systems From the Original

So, the world in Resynced – both the oceans and land – will have all the same kinds of side stuff to do as the original game. They’re completely rebuilding all of that, which is awesome, and they’ll be showing more details soon. They were pretty secretive about those social chests, though – the lead dev just winked and said a pirate never reveals their treasure! Those chests used to connect to Uplay, and since they’re changing up the ship system which also used Uplay, I’m guessing those chests will get a makeover too. Good news is, all the side missions are coming back, and so are social stealth and all 30-ish costumes! They didn’t share much more about those features yet, though.

Fu continued discussing the revamped combat system in Resynced, explaining that the team drew inspiration from players skilled with swords and pistols. He also detailed how they’re working to make Edward Kenway’s weapons more useful in gameplay, as some previously focused more on appearance than actual function.

According to Fu, the combat in Resynced takes a lot of inspiration from fan-made combo videos of the original game. The team aimed to recreate Edward’s fast-paced, parry-focused fighting style, but also wanted a more modern and complex combat system. While using guns and tools in the original game was visually exciting, it lacked strategic depth. In Resynced, players will need to use different moves depending on the situation and react quickly to perform impressive combos.

We’ve already gotten a taste of the game from recent reveals, but more details are on the way leading up to its July 9th release. According to Fu, they plan to share an in-depth look at naval combat in May, and a detailed breakdown of general combat is coming very soon. Knight also mentioned another gameplay reveal, though it’s currently unclear if this will be different from the combat breakdown already announced.
