Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again integrates the Marvel Netflix and Marvel Cinematic Universes more seamlessly than the first season. The show’s consistent creative direction allows for clever references to past characters and storylines. This includes major crossovers like the return of The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), as well as smaller, more rewarding reunions for dedicated fans.
Episode 7 of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is a great example of how the Marvel Cinematic Universe can successfully incorporate elements from the old Marvel-Netflix shows without feeling forced or awkward. Hopefully, future MCU TV series and movies will follow this approach.
Daredevil Netflix Star Makes His Official MCU Debut

The seventh episode of Daredevil: Born Again, titled “The Hateful Darkness,” begins with Karen Page in jail after being arrested by Connor Powell, the head of the task force against vigilantes. She’s soon visited by Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin, who attempts to frighten and threaten her. Meanwhile, Matt Murdock, as Daredevil, and his team work to reach Karen and help her.
Matt asks his former police officer friend, Cherry, for help reaching someone within the police department who can get him access to Karen’s holding cell. As fans predicted, that person is Detective Chief Brett Mahoney. Mahoney quietly lets Karen out of her cell and allows her to meet with Daredevil behind the precinct, then returns her without anyone noticing.

Brett Mahoney was a significant recurring character in the Marvel-Netflix shows, rivaled only by Claire Temple. Mahoney, a police officer and childhood friend of Foggy Nelson, regularly provided Foggy and Matt Murdock with information about people who desperately needed a lawyer but couldn’t afford one, enabling them to offer their help.
Detective Mahoney played a key role in the conflict between Wilson Fisk, a powerful crime boss, and Daredevil, the masked vigilante. He ultimately came to support Daredevil’s methods, culminating in the first season finale of the Netflix series Daredevil where Daredevil left Fisk subdued and ready for Mahoney to arrest in the streets of Hell’s Kitchen.
Over the years, Mahoney rose through the ranks of the NYPD, becoming a detective and eventually Chief of Detectives. He also spent years assisting street-level vigilantes, including helping Jessica Jones fight Kilgrave and aiding Frank Castle/The Punisher when Billy Russo, as Jigsaw, became a dangerous threat. Previously, Mahoney had attempted to arrest Jigsaw through legal channels, but the Punisher and his allies killed Russo before he could, which frustrated Mahoney with the vigilantes’ methods.

The return of Detective Mahoney in Daredevil: Born Again is a perfect example of how Marvel can successfully integrate characters from its previous shows. His appearance feels natural and well-planned – it’s explained that a connection was made to put him on Karen Page’s team – and it’s a huge win for longtime fans of the Netflix Daredevil series. Importantly, it doesn’t disrupt the current story or feel forced. Mahoney is a flexible character who could easily appear in future Marvel projects, including the upcoming Punisher special, One Last Kill. Like Claire Temple or Turk Barrett, he’s more than just a cameo; he represents the gritty, street-level world established by the Marvel-Netflix shows, and he helps make this new Daredevil feel connected to its roots. Marvel should definitely continue using him.
