Titus Welliver’s 7-Part Crime Western Sets Up His Next Bosch Storyline

As a long-time fan, I was thrilled to see Titus Welliver return as Harry Bosch, and this recent seven-part story felt like a perfect bridge to what comes next. Honestly, Bosch has cemented itself as one of the all-time great detective shows, and Welliver’s performance is a huge reason why. While the original series wrapped up in 2021 after seven seasons, the world didn’t end there. We’ve been lucky enough to follow Bosch through the Bosch: Legacy spin-off, which just concluded in 2025, and now with Ballard, focusing on the compelling Detective Renée Ballard, played by Maggie Q. It’s great to see this universe continuing to expand!

Though Lance Reddick’s character, Ballard, is the central focus of the new series, taking charge of the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division, Titus Welliver previously starred as Bosch in the Legacy spin-off. Welliver made a cameo in Ballard’s first season and is likely to reappear. As Ballard gears up for season two, a storyline for Welliver’s Bosch was cleverly introduced in Sons of Anarchy.

Before he played Harry Bosch, Welliver appeared in the series Sons of Anarchy. Created by Kurt Sutter, the show centers on a motorcycle club—led by Clay Morrow and Jax Teller—and the drama and hardships they face. Welliver was on Sons of Anarchy for three seasons, and his role there foreshadows elements of his character in Bosch, specifically connected to the Ballard storyline.

Titus Welliver Played Arms Dealer “Jimmy O” In Sons Of Anarchy

Over seven seasons, the motorcycle club SAMCRO and its leader, Jax, experience a lot of ups and downs due to their criminal lifestyle. They encounter numerous enemies, some who want to dismantle the club entirely and others who have personal grudges against its members. Jimmy O’Phelan (played by Kim Coates), a powerful gang leader connected to the True IRA, is one such threat – he has both a desire to see SAMCRO fall and a personal conflict with member Chibs Telford.

The True IRA is a criminal organization that illegally sells Russian guns, primarily to motorcycle clubs like SAMCRO. They also run a human trafficking operation, which they conceal by posing as Catholic orphanages, as revealed in season 3. O’Phelan is a major villain for the first three seasons of Sons of Anarchy, known for being powerful, ruthless, unpredictable, and having no boundaries when it comes to inflicting harm.

The bad blood between O’Phelan and Chibs creates more drama within SAMCRO, ultimately leading to a particularly rewarding moment of payback in Sons of Anarchy. While Bosch reversed the dynamic for Welliver, season 2 of Ballard will put him back in a situation similar to the one O’Phelan faced.

Welliver’s Next Harry Bosch Storyline Will Be All About Gun Smuggling

The show Ballard launched on Prime Video in July 2025 and quickly became popular, with many viewers praising the performance of Q and the show’s atmosphere. It was renewed for a second season just two months later. While a release date hasn’t been announced, the new season is expected to be based on Michael Connelly’s novel, The Waiting.

Released in 2024, The Waiting centers on detectives Ballard and Bosch as they reopen a cold case from twenty years ago. The investigation takes a dangerous turn when Ballard discovers her gun and badge have been stolen, pulling both detectives into a larger gun trafficking operation. This will bring Welliver, who played O’Phelan in Sons of Anarchy, back into the world of gun smuggling, but this time in a new role and from a different perspective.

What To Expect From Ballard Season 2

The first season of Ballard ended with a shocking twist: Ballard’s arrest for murder. Season two is set to pick up right there, focusing on her fight to clear her name and uncover the true killer. The new season will also explore the mystery of who set her up and why.

The second season of Ballard will include elements from The Waiting, though it may not be a direct adaptation of the book – similar to how many book-based shows take inspiration rather than follow the story exactly. Harry Bosch is anticipated to return for the new season, but the extent of his role is still unknown. The show will continue to build on the connections between the worlds of Bosch and Sons of Anarchy, offering intriguing similarities and showcasing different facets of actor Titus Welliver’s work.
