Naughty Dog, the studio behind The Last of Us, has chosen to focus on its single-player games and has cancelled the online multiplayer game they were developing. You might remember hearing about this earlier.
Fans of The Last of Us are clearly unhappy, and many are taking action by starting an online petition. On Change.org, they’re asking for the release of the game’s multiplayer component.
The petition asks Naughty Dog and PlayStation to deliver on their 2020 commitment and launch the next installment of Factions online. It argues that releasing it would both show appreciation for dedicated fans and take advantage of current trends in gaming.
At the time of writing, the petition has accumulated 685 signatures.
I always thought the Factions mode in the original game was brilliant – it really captured the feel of The Last of Us in a multiplayer setting. So, when I heard they were making a whole separate online game based on that idea, I was super hyped! It felt like a natural progression and something fans like me were really hoping for.
Following discussions with Bungie and a careful assessment of the ongoing work required to support a live service game like The Last of Us multiplayer, Naughty Dog decided to cancel the project.
The company is now concentrating on what it does best: creating immersive, single-player action adventure games, such as the highly anticipated Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Details about the canceled Last of Us multiplayer game have been gradually revealed, and this has only increased the disappointment among fans.
One former Naughty Dog employee revealed the game was nearly finished – about 80% complete – after seven years of work. Other people who used to work there described it as the best multiplayer game they’d ever experienced.
As a result of everything that’s happened, a petition asking for the game to be released has gained hundreds of supporters.
Sadly, these efforts rarely get noticed by the people who can make a difference, and even more rarely lead to any actual change. We don’t think it will have much impact unless it really gains momentum.
We appreciate fans expressing their opinions and wanting to see the game released, but it’s unlikely Naughty Dog and Sony will change their minds.
