Darth Vader’s Inquisitors are some of the most frightening villains in the Star Wars universe, and recent movies, TV shows, and games have really highlighted how terrifying they are. Series like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars: The Bad Batch show just how cruel and merciless these Force-sensitive Jedi hunters were. For example, in Obi-Wan Kenobi, Reva Sevander was willing to torture young Leia and even attempt to kill young Luke, driven by both duty and personal revenge.
I’ve always been fascinated by the Inquisitors, and one thing that really stands out is their weaponry. They wield these incredible double-bladed, red lightsabers, and it’s not just for show! I remember seeing them used effectively against Jedi Masters and their apprentices, like in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. It totally makes sense, considering their main job was hunting down any Jedi who survived Order 66. But it’s not just the double blade—these lightsabers actually spin, and that’s not a random detail either. It’s clearly designed for a specific purpose in how they fight.
The Imperial Inquisitors’ Lightsabers Spun For A Reason

The spinning lightsabers used by the Inquisitors weren’t just for show, though they certainly looked impressive to Star Wars fans. This feature actually made them more threatening opponents. The spinning motion made their lightsabers much harder to defend against – even for skilled Jedi or Padawans – similar to how General Grievous’ multiple spinning lightsabers worked.
While incredibly skilled Jedi like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano might handle a spinning double-bladed lightsaber with ease, they are exceptional cases. Both of them fought Darth Maul – a Sith Lord when Obi-Wan faced him, and a former Sith when Ahsoka fought him, even though she wasn’t a fully-fledged Jedi at the time. For most Jedi, though, this weapon wasn’t part of their training, making its spinning action and rapid attacks much more threatening and difficult to defend against.
Inquisitors Needed These Enhancements

The Inquisitors truly needed advanced lightsabers. While they were already skilled and Force-sensitive, making them dangerous opponents, their mission was incredibly challenging. They weren’t simply hunting Jedi; they were pursuing those who had miraculously survived Order 66. Though a few Jedi, like Grogu, were saved by others, surviving the massacre itself was extremely difficult, meaning the Inquisitors faced some of the most powerful Jedi around and needed to be fully prepared.
Unlike the Sith, the Inquisitors were highly trained killers, but not Force users of the same rank. In fact, some, like Asajj Ventress, trained by Count Dooku, were arguably more skilled. Because they needed an edge against the Jedi, they were equipped with powerful, dual-bladed spinning lightsabers.
In The End, These Designs Still Weren’t Enough

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always felt the Inquisitors were a bit of a missed opportunity for the Empire. Sure, they took out some Jedi who survived Order 66 and other Force-sensitive people, but they really didn’t achieve what the Empire needed them to. Let’s be honest, the original trilogy proves the Jedi weren’t wiped out, and that ultimately became the Empire’s downfall – exactly what Palpatine was so afraid of happening.
Ultimately, the Inquisitors’ failure with the spinning double-bladed lightsaber wasn’t about the weapon itself, but their lack of skill. While Darth Vader could have used it effectively, the Inquisitors couldn’t master it to reach its full potential. Even a weakened Maul exposed their shortcomings; Marrok and the Eleventh Brother easily had him trapped, but he managed to escape by collapsing rocks on them, highlighting their inability to finish the fight.
While it seemed like a great idea to use powerful, dark side users with dual-bladed lightsabers to defeat the last of the Jedi, they repeatedly failed against skilled Jedi Masters – and even someone like Maul proved to be a challenge.
