Following the popularity of the animated musical KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix, a sequel is planned, though it won’t be released for several years. In the meantime, the show’s stars – Audrey Nuna, Ejae, and Rei Am – have been making headlines. Recently, they were honored at the Billboard Women in Music event, where they spoke openly about the challenges they’ve faced in the music industry.
Rei Ami, who voices Zoey in KPop Demon Hunters, spoke frankly about the challenges women face in the entertainment industry. She explained that it’s often incredibly difficult being a woman in a field dominated by men, often requiring twice the effort with a constant need to appear positive while facing constant criticism. She described the impossible standards women are held to – being told they’re either too thin or too heavy, too quiet or too dramatic. Ami emphasized that confidence is often seen as a threat, yet it’s precisely that confidence that draws attention. She celebrated the resilience and strength of women, calling their ability to persevere a superpower, and thanked all the women present for inspiring, leading, and protecting others. Her message was clear: women shouldn’t be made to feel they are ‘too much’ – they are exactly as powerful and deserving as they believe themselves to be.

Rumi, a singer and bandmate of Ejae, spoke about her journey and the lack of representation she saw growing up. She initially dreamed of becoming a K-pop idol, but when that didn’t pan out, she felt lost. Discovering songwriting changed everything. She realized music valued authenticity, not appearance. By embracing her identity – her voice, her Korean heritage, and her experiences as a woman – she found her power. Rumi believes a woman’s strength lies in speaking her truth, not in trying to fit in. She encourages all women to embrace their voices and stories, amplify them, and recognize that their identities are sources of power. When women create fearlessly, support each other, and claim their space, they not only make music but also have the potential to transform it.
Details about the next installment of KPop Demon Hunters are still under wraps, but the team behind the first one has shared some ideas about its direction. Director and writer Maggie Chang has suggested the story will broaden its scope in the sequel. Since we only got a small glimpse of the demon world in the first film, the possibilities for future stories seem endless.
