Bungie has stated that it’s committed to the future of Marathon, its recently released PS5 shooting game, despite mixed reactions from players.
I was really excited when the game came out earlier this year, but honestly, the sales haven’t been amazing. Still, it feels like the developers have a lot more planned for the future – like they’re building something big over the next few years, which is awesome!
In an interview with GamesRadar, creative director Julia Nardin explained that the development team wants the game’s story to progress at a pace that feels natural for players.
We have a general idea of where we’re heading with the story for the next few years, but we’re not set in stone. We want our players to have a voice in how things unfold, so we’re keeping things flexible.
Honestly, one of the coolest things about playing Marathon is how we, as players, actually get to shape the story. The developers call it ‘the magic of a live service game,’ and it really is! It’s awesome knowing our choices and actions can have a real impact on how things unfold.
The game’s future story has a general outline that players will help shape, but its past will remain a solid and established foundation.
According to Nardin, the history of the planet Tau Ceti before the game begins is already set in stone. Players will piece together this story as they play and find certain items. It seems Bungie plans to add even more clues and background details over time.
She emphasized that players should be able to start playing Marathon whenever they want, and that big updates won’t confuse those who are already familiar with the story.
According to Nardin, players will continuously learn about the history of Tau Ceti while also engaging with the current story. The goal is to make each new season accessible, so both longtime fans and new players can easily follow what’s happening.
It appears Marathon will remain active for a long time, with its story developing as the game continues to grow.
