Serena Wiliams is no stranger to acing her red carpet fashion.
Consider her 2026 Met Gala appearance as evidence. The tennis star wore a shimmering metallic gown by Marc Jacobs as she arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 4th. Perfectly matching the night’s “Fashion Is Art” theme, she completed her look with David Yurman jewelry and an Audemars Piguet watch.
Honestly, the most talked-about part of her look wasn’t the dress – it was her shoes! These weren’t your average heels; they were golden and wrapped all the way up her leg, almost like a piece of art. They really made a statement! (You can see all the amazing looks from the Met Gala right here.)
Serena Williams is a regular at the annual Met Gala in New York City, held on the first Monday in May. This year, however, she’s attending not as a guest, but to support her sister, and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, wasn’t with her.
Venus Williams will be a co-chair of the 2026 event celebrating the “Costume Art” exhibit, joining Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Anna Wintour. Jeff and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, who are sponsoring the gala, will serve as honorary co-chairs.
Serena has also been a co-chair of the Met Gala, back in 2019. She hosted the event alongside Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and designer Alessandro Michele. She famously wore a stunning yellow Versace dress with Nike sneakers designed by Virgil Abloh, and the story behind those sneakers is quite interesting.

In a 2022 interview with Vogue, the 44-year-old shared that Anna Wintour advised them to wear comfortable shoes like tennis shoes, explaining they’d be on their feet for a long time.
Even though the outfit was put together quickly, and the shoes arrived just the night before, it’s a look she still loves and considers timeless.
The Grand Slam champion explained that while on the red carpet, they specifically wanted people to notice their Virgil Nike shoes, which perfectly complemented their dress. They pointed out that wearing Nike to the Met Gala is unusual – most attendees wear very formal, high-fashion outfits, but their chosen look combined Versace with Nike.
