Anime often focuses on action-packed battles or heartwarming romantic comedies, but some stories really make you think. Steins;Gate is one of those stories. Though it’s a complex time-travel saga without a lot of fighting, it’s considered a classic. Originally a visual novel in 2009, it became an anime series in 2011 and gained fans around the world. After a long wait, a new version of Steins;Gate is coming out this summer, giving the main character, Rintaro Okabe, another chance to change the past.
This summer, on August 20th, Steins;Gate Re:Boot will be released on several gaming platforms. Originally scheduled for 2025, this remake revisits the core of the Steins;Gate series and will be available on Nintendo Switch & Switch 2, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam. Here’s a look at the game’s description and a trailer: “The universe is endless, but stars are not. History shows that the wisest can be fools. Just as fish cannot survive on land, those who seek too much will be destroyed. It’s as impossible for humans to travel faster than light as it is for fish to live on land. This is a final warning to those who defy the natural order.”
Open The Gate
If you’re curious about the changes in this new game, the developers at MAGS explain that Re:Boot is a faster-paced and more accessible version of Steins;Gate Elite. They’ve added new story paths and endings, offering a completely fresh experience. The game has also received a major visual overhaul, with all characters, backgrounds, and event images completely redrawn. In fact, there are roughly twice as many event images as the original Xbox 360 version, and backgrounds are about 20% larger, creating a much more immersive world.
In early 2020, it was announced that the anime Steins;Gate would be adapted into a live-action series, joining many other anime that have received similar treatment. As of 2024, the producer, Tatsuya Matsubara, has confirmed the show is still being made, but no new updates have been released this year. Beyond the original anime, Steins;Gate has continued to appear in unexpected places. For example, there was a crossover with Hello Kitty, bringing together two very different franchises. While not a full anime series, this showed the potential for Steins;Gate to expand into new forms of entertainment.
