Godzilla is incredibly popular right now, both in North America and Japan. In North America, the monster has been the star of Legendary’s MonsterVerse films, while in Japan, Toho has been making critically acclaimed Godzilla movies, including the recent Godzilla Minus One. This November, a sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, directed by Takashi Yamazaki, will hit theaters. However, before the sequel’s release, someone who was excited about the films was arrested for posting spoilers online.
Japan has stricter copyright and intellectual property laws than North America. It’s even illegal to simply describe the plot of a film, even without showing any clips. Wataru Takeuchi, 39, learned this the hard way after posting detailed spoilers for the movie Godzilla Minus One between 2023 and 2024. He also spoiled the anime film Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom. As a result, Takeuchi was recently sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined one million yen.
Don’t Spoil Godzilla

In addition to the harsh sentence, Japan’s Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA) explained why Takeuchi received such a strict penalty. CODA stated that many websites are illegally taking text from movies and other media, acting as so-called “spoiler sites.” While these sites might seem less harmful than those directly pirating content, they still violate copyright laws and go beyond what’s considered fair use. These sites discourage people from paying for and watching official content, which significantly harms the creators and rights holders. CODA emphasized that profiting from creators’ hard work and investment through these sites is unacceptable and deeply damaging.
The organization explained its plans to prevent future online spoilers, stating they will closely follow this case and continue protecting copyrights while working against similar websites. This work was funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. As fans await the November 3rd release of Godzilla Minus One in Japan, they should watch for further developments regarding legal action against those sharing unauthorized content.
