Amazon reportedly cancels its planned Lord of the Rings MMO – but more awaits fans of Middle Earth

Amazon has decided to discontinue development of their Lord of the Rings online game, but they are still working on other games set in the world of Middle-earth that fans can anticipate.

There have been many Lord of the Rings games released over the years, ranging from excellent titles like Return of the King on PS2 and Shadow of Mordor on PS3, to some truly disappointing ones – like the recently released Gollum game.

With the new LEGO Batman game on the horizon, it’s important to remember that LEGO Lord of the Rings is still considered one of the greatest LEGO games and one of the best video games based on the Lord of the Rings franchise.

Amazon first revealed plans for a large-scale, online Lord of the Rings game in 2023, and today we’re getting more news about it – it sounds like a really promising project!

A recent Eurogamer report indicates that Amazon has cancelled its Lord of the Rings MMO project.

Based on the report, Amazon appears to be changing its approach to gaming. They’re moving away from large-scale online games, as evidenced by the discontinuation of New World and Lost Ark, and the layoffs that happened last October.

Despite the recent news, there’s still hope for Lord of the Rings fans who want to see more video games based on the franchise.

According to Jeff Grattis, Amazon’s games chief, a new video game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth is still being developed.

I was really happy to hear from Grattis that the team is still hard at work on a new game set in Middle-earth! They’re determined to create something truly amazing that really captures the spirit of Tolkien’s world, and they’re working directly with the folks who own the rights to make sure it feels authentic. They’re still super enthusiastic about the whole project, which is awesome to hear!

Recent speculation suggests that Warhorse Studios, the team behind the acclaimed medieval game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, might be developing a game based on The Lord of the Rings.

If you’re hoping for a single-player, open-world game set in Middle-earth, filled with exciting adventures, it’s hard to imagine a more perfect developer than Warhorse Studio.

We recently spoke with Tom McKay, the actor who plays Henry in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance games, at the BAFTA Games Awards. We asked him which character he’d like to play if the rumors about a Lord of the Rings game were true.

Honestly, there are so many awesome characters in these games. I’m talking seriously deep and complex people. Like, it would be amazing to have someone with that classic Aragorn feel – you know, a strong, noble leader type – in there.

There are a lot of possibilities, and honestly, if someone asked me to take on the role, I’d probably steer it away from being too similar to the Henry character. I enjoy playing a wide variety of characters, and I’d prefer to explore different options.

Look, I’ll definitely share any news I find out about future Lord of the Rings games. And honestly, I’ve learned that game announcements happen when they need to happen – there’s no rushing it, and they’ll drop when the time is right. I’m staying patient, and you should too!
