The first major new sourcebook for Dungeons & Dragons in 2026 is Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. This book, designed for the current 5th edition of D&D, provides everything players and Dungeon Masters need to add scary new elements to their games. It officially releases on June 16th, but is already available to D&D Beyond Master Tier subscribers as a preview. This means many DMs are getting an early look at the stats for the book’s villains, and are likely wondering which one to use first.

The Horrors Within introduces stats and details for 17 powerful Dark Lords, featuring both new villains and familiar faces. Each Dark Lord rules over a unique Domain of Dread and embodies a specific horror subgenre. While there are many frightening options, it can be overwhelming to navigate them all. Here’s a rundown of the most terrifying new D&D Dark Lords, ranked from most to least powerful based on their stat blocks.

Honestly, if our party is prepared, it might not be the huge threat the DM is hoping for. But then you get to its special abilities, like resisting magic and, seriously, controlling nearby undead? That’s where it gets truly terrifying. Imagine fighting Ebonbane and then having to battle your own fallen friends… that’s nightmare fuel, and if that isn’t a horror experience, I don’t know what is!

4) Saidra D’Honaire (Dementlieu’s Dark Lord)

Saidra was once a duchess, but now exists as an undead being. She stubbornly clings to the idea that she’s still alive, and keeps a whole court under her control. Anyone who questions this illusion finds their life force drained away. While she pretends to live normally during the day, Saidra stalks the streets at night, killing anyone who displeases her.

Saidra is incredibly perceptive – she can see through any deception, a quality that sets her apart even among the most powerful villains. She’s also deadly; she can instantly kill anyone who tries to lie to her, inflicting grievous wounds and draining their life force. When she’s disguising herself, she’ll try to manipulate you with charm, hoping you’ll overlook her dangerous abilities. However, Saidra isn’t without her weaknesses, which might make her a slightly less terrifying opponent than some of the other Dark Lords.

3) Viktra Mordenheim (Lamordia’s Dark Lord)

If you enjoy stories inspired by Frankenstein, you’ll find Viktra Mordeheim a compelling villain. She’s a scientist obsessed with the body, creating terrifying creatures and raising the undead. But her most dangerous trait is her fixation on recovering her ultimate creation – and a lost love – which drives her relentless pursuit.

Viktra is a scientist obsessed with the boundary between life and death, and she’s a terrifying opponent. She can strike multiple times in a single turn, and she uses poisoned syringes and strange serums to weaken her enemies – or even warp their perception of reality. Her abilities are versatile, giving Dungeon Masters many ways to challenge players, making her a formidable villain in most campaigns.

2) Harkon Lukas (Kartakass’ Dark Lord)

No horror story is complete without a werewolf, and Harkon Luks fills that role in Kartakass. He’s obsessed with becoming famous and gets what he wants by turning talented people into werewolves, forcing them to be loyal to him. Beyond his interesting history and relentless ambition, Harkon is also a very powerful creature in the game.

Harkon is especially dangerous because he hits harder against enemies who are already injured, quickly turning fights against you. He’s also a tough opponent thanks to his ability to change shape and constantly heal himself. To make matters even worse, his bite can curse you, or even transform you into a werewolf loyal to him.

1) Ivana Boritsi (Borca’s Dark Lord)

I have to say, Ivana just looks dangerous. She’s got this whole vibe going on, like Poison Ivy with her love of plants and perfumes. But it’s her history that really gets me – she’s casually used poisons without a second thought, which is seriously creepy even before you look at her abilities. And speaking of abilities, wow! Compared to a classic villain like Strahd, she doesn’t seem to have many weaknesses at all. It makes her a really intimidating opponent.

She’s incredibly charming, but also dangerous – capable of stopping even experienced adventurers. Those she poisons don’t stay down for long, often returning as her loyal Vine Blight minions. I’d definitely avoid crossing paths with her in the Mists.
