Lucio Fulci’s Zombie Flesh Eaters, starring Ian McCulloch and Auretta Gay, is a famously gruesome horror film. Its extreme gore led to it being one of 72 films banned in the early 1980s. Because it wasn’t certified for cinema release in the UK, it was instead released on the rapidly growing, and at the time unregulated, home video market – and it never did play in UK cinemas.

The 1979 film centers around a group of strangers who travel to a tropical island to find a missing woman’s father. There, they encounter a doctor urgently trying to understand and stop a new outbreak of the undead. The film was known for its graphic violence, and many scenes were cut, including a particularly infamous shot of a splinter in someone’s eyeball.

British actor Ian McCulloch was known for his roles in popular TV shows like Colditz, Crown Court, Dr. Finlay’s Casebook, and Secret Army, but Zombie Flesh Eaters was a very different experience for him. The director, Fulci, was a demanding perfectionist, and he quickly became frustrated with actress Auretta Gay during filming – behavior that wouldn’t be accepted on movie sets today. Sadly, Gay’s career was short-lived, consisting of only four films, with Zombie Flesh Eaters being just her second.
