
EA and the four studios developing *Battlefield 6*-Ripple Effect, Criterion, DICE, and Motive Studios-have been sharing details about the new game. Recently, technical director Christian Buhl and senior console combat designer Matthew Nickerson spoke with IGN to discuss the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. A key topic was how the game will handle cross-platform play, allowing players on different systems to compete against each other in multiplayer.
Nickerson confirmed that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of *Battlefield 6* will primarily match players on consoles. The game will only begin searching for PC players if there aren’t enough console players available to fill a match, as previously stated.
Regarding how we match players, it works as you’d expect: we prioritize pairing console players with other console players for a certain amount of time. If we need more players to fill up the game, then we’ll include PC players. We’re really focused on getting crossplay right for *Battlefield 6* and have put in a lot of work to balance how different input methods – like controllers versus mouse and keyboard – affect gameplay. We’ve analyzed not only how players *like* to play, but also how each input method impacts their overall performance, including both strengths and weaknesses.
The game’s development included significant adjustments to aim assist, especially for players using controllers. Nickerson explained that the aim assist system, originally from *Battlefield 2042*, was rebuilt from the ground up. This new system, internally called the “combat triangle,” is designed to balance encounters between players on foot, players versus vehicles, and vehicles battling each other.

During the interview, Buhl also stated that both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will let players choose between two graphics settings: Performance and Quality. The Performance mode is designed to achieve a smooth frame rate of 80 FPS or better. Quality mode will target at least 60 FPS while also improving graphics and overall visual experience.
Unlike the Xbox Series X, the Xbox Series S will run the game in a single setting, targeting 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution. The developers talked about their work to optimize *Battlefield 6* for this less powerful console earlier this week.
