Bridgerton star gives verdict on Whistledown season 4 twist: “I’ve taken everything out of it that I could possibly want”

The fourth season of Bridgerton focused heavily on the romance between Benedict and Sophie, but there were also many other happenings within London’s high society.

With the main character from season five now officially paired up, fans are excited to speculate about what will happen next. But the last moments of season four also left everyone shocked!

In the fourth season of the popular Netflix series, Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) stopped writing as Whistledown, deciding she didn’t want the attention that came with being famous.

The fourth season ends with Penelope back at her writing desk, but this time she’s working on her own novel, as she tells her husband, Colin. Colin is puzzled, and hands her a copy of Lady Whistledown’s latest publication, asking who actually wrote it. It’s a shocking reveal that leaves viewers hanging!

While discussing the second season of Channel 4’s ‘Big Mood,’ Nicola Coughlan reacted to the surprising reveal of Lady Whistledown’s identity. She told TopMob that the twist is a positive thing, as it demonstrates the show’s ability to constantly evolve. She explained that, like leading a show, it requires a delicate balance – a strong commitment alongside the ability to step back. She enjoyed her role but admitted it was incredibly demanding and a lot of work.

She explained that filming and promoting the project took up about fourteen months of her life, which she didn’t mind at the time. It was a fantastic experience, and she feels she got everything she wanted out of it.

It’s wonderful to be able to share the show with a new audience. We’re starting season five of filming now, and I think it’s a good time to introduce some fresh faces. The show doesn’t usually focus on the same characters for too long, and it’s great to see Florence Hunt, Will Tilston, and Hannah Dodd joining the cast.

She said she’d definitely stay involved, offering to help out whenever they needed her, even if it was just offering support from the sidelines.

The mystery of who’s currently writing Lady Whistledown’s newsletter will probably unfold similarly to how it did in the first season – with both viewers and characters guessing the author’s identity.

When asked if the show’s creators knew the identity of Lady Whistledown, showrunner Jess Brownell previously told TopMob that she, Shonda Rhimes, and the writing team had known all along and had been writing the story with that knowledge. They were particularly excited to allow Penelope Featherington to evolve into a successful novelist and explore her romantic relationship with Colin.

Revealing Penelope as Whistledown at the end of season one, and especially her public confession at the end of season three, lessened the tension for season four. The mystery just didn’t feel as high-stakes anymore.
