Just a quick heads-up before you read on: this review touches on some sensitive topics related to mental health, and I want to acknowledge that those themes could be upsetting for some viewers. I’ll be approaching these subjects with care, but I wanted to give you a warning beforehand.
Ravi Gulati’s (Aaron Thiara) mental health storyline continues in EastEnders next week.
For several months, the BBC soap opera has featured a storyline about a character struggling with his mental health. He’s started hurting himself and become increasingly worried about the safety of his family.
Ben Wadey, Executive Producer of EastEnders, explained that the show thoroughly researches sensitive storylines like Ravi’s. He expressed gratitude to the Samaritans for their guidance, which helped ensure the story was handled with appropriate care and sensitivity.
Earlier this week on the show, Priya Nandra-Hart (played by Aaliyah James) tried to get Ravi medical help at Walford Hospital after he held her family hostage in their home.

Everyone was incredibly tense when Ravi admitted he was responsible for the attack on Nugget back in January. He only seemed to relax when he promised them both a fresh start away from Albert Square.
Priya was rushing him to the hospital, and he quickly noticed signs for the emergency room along the way. Unfortunately, Nugget started having another seizure, and Priya briefly glanced away from the road, causing their car to crash into Max Branning’s (Jake Wood).
Ravi left the hospital before he was fully recovered and climbed onto the Turpin Road bridge, where he refused to come down.

His family watched with horror, but he was eventually guided to safety after his son, Nugget (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury), reassured them things would improve. Paramedics and police were on the scene and prepared to take him in for a mental health evaluation.
Okay, so in the next part of the film, we really delve into the character’s struggles as he’s admitted to a mental health facility. It doesn’t take long for the doctors to diagnose him with complex PTSD, and from there, we see them begin to develop a treatment plan to help him work through his trauma. It’s a pretty raw and honest portrayal of dealing with deeply rooted psychological issues, and I think it’s handled with a lot of sensitivity.

EastEnders is collaborating with the Samaritans on a storyline. Lorna Fraser from the charity explains that portraying mental health and suicide sensitively can help reduce stigma and encourage people who are struggling to reach out and talk about their feelings.
We’re pleased to have worked with EastEnders on their recent storyline about Ravi’s self-harm and mental health struggles, and we appreciate their commitment to handling it with care and sensitivity. We hope this storyline encourages anyone who’s going through a difficult time to reach out for help.
