Recent reports suggested NetEase Games was going to stop funding Toshihiro Nagoshi’s game, Gang of Dragon, and now the trailer for the game has been removed from YouTube. So far, Nagoshi himself hasn’t commented on the game’s development status.
You can still find the trailer on YouTube, including on The Game Awards’ official channel where it was originally shown. The Nagoshi Studios X (formerly Twitter) account is still up, and its pinned post still links to the first trailer for Gang of Dragon. However, the account hasn’t been updated since early February. Surprisingly, the game’s Steam page is still live as well.
A representative explained that the decision to stop funding Gang of Dragon was due to its projected development cost of ¥7 billion, which is about $44.4 million. Because the partnership ended, Nagoshi Studios would now have to pay NetEase Games for the rights and resources if they wanted to keep working on the game. Currently, Nagoshi is looking for new investors to support the project.
I was so excited to hear about Gang of Dragon! It’s the first game from Toshihiro Nagoshi, the creator of the amazing Yakuza (or Like a Dragon as it’s now known) series. He started his own studio, Nagoshi Studios, in 2022 after leaving Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, and apparently had been quietly working on this new project ever since!
When Nagoshi started his studio, he aimed to build a creative environment where developers could freely express themselves. He believed that even the most skilled individuals need collaboration to reach their full potential. This meant encouraging open communication regardless of experience level, embracing experimentation, and viewing mistakes not as failures, but as opportunities for growth.
The game was set in Kabukicho, Tokyo’s vibrant nightlife district, and would feature Ma Dong-seok as Shin Ji-seong. He plays a powerful figure in a Korean crime organization operating in Kabukicho, and the story centers on a major war between different criminal groups. Notably, Kabukicho is the real-life inspiration for Kamurocho, the setting of the popular Yakuza series.
Gang of Dragon was planned as an action game with fast-paced, third-person combat. Players would have primarily fought using close-quarters hand-to-hand attacks and swords, with guns appearing in bigger battles. The game would also have included sections where you drive vehicles.
Nagoshi explained in an interview that Gang of Dragon was completely original, built from the start. He also characterized the story as a realistic and emotional tale about people on the fringes of society, set in Tokyo’s Kabukicho district.
We’ve carefully designed every aspect of the game, from the city and world to how it actually plays, and are building it completely from scratch as we continue development. Our team is dedicated to creating a game we’re proud to share with players globally.
Gang of Dragon never got a release date.
